The Role

Are you a highly motivated individual with a prior research background in Process Intensification or Carbon Capture? The School of Engineering at Newcastle University could be the place for you.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Process Intensification Group at Newcastle University, one of the world’s leading research groups in this area. You will be working on the Department of Energy and Net Zero (DESNZ) funded project, CarboNation, which aims to develop and deploy intensified modular process technology for carbon capture and utilisation from spray dryer exhaust gas. More information on this government programme to support CCUS can be found here. This project is a collaboration between the project leaders Procter and Gamble, Newcastle University, and the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI). You will be a researcher with experience in chemical engineering / chemistry and will hold or be working towards a PhD in a related discipline.

You should hold a PhD for Associate Level (or nearing completion for Assistant Level) in chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or a closely related discipline.

The appointment is fixed-term, tenable for 22 months in the first instance from July 2023. The position is available on a full-time basis (37 hours per week).

Key Accountabilities
Help to design and carry out pilot scale trials of carbon capture from dryer off gas using a rotating packed bed
Use a range of laboratory methods to measure the key variables used to close the mass balance and heat balance for the carbon capture process
Use the pilot scale rotating packed bed to produce test materials for the other project partners
Design and analyse experiments involving the deployment of rotating packed beds for carbon capture in the 1 ton per day CO2 industrial trial
Work successfully in an interdisciplinary research team to deliver a viable process for carbon capture from dryer off gas
Present outputs of the research from the research team to scientific and non-scientific audiences, in written and oral form
Contribute to the positive culture and general strengths of the research group and the Schools; for example, through supervision of project students, organising/ participating in research events as well as participation in outreach
Any other duties that may be required from time to time, commensurate with the grade of the post

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience of working with lab scale pilot plant equipment
Demonstrable ability to devise and plan lab scale trials, including safety assessments, that balance the mass and energy flows for a pilot scale process
Analytical skills associated with measuring concentrations in the gas and liquid phases
Background in applied inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering
Analytical skills associated with characterising particulate solids
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write research publications, and to effectively communicate results to the scientific and industry stakeholders
A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career
Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings and working on joint research projects
Contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, to provide ‘added value’ to the core project (Desirable)
Experience in creating and/or delivering activities designed to promote science to the general public and/or to make science more accessible and inclusive (Desirable)
