The Role

We are delighted to be seeking a motivated individual to join our project, in the School of Computing at Newcastle. The aim of the project is to develop novel data science solutions unlocking the potential of water and energy efficiencies at domestic properties. As part of the technical development, you will be working closely with Northumbrian Water and key collaborators including P&G, Northern Gas Networks and National Energy Action to ensure the delivery of tangible benefit to residential consumers, the environment and pertinent stakeholders.

You will research, design, implement and validate advanced machine learning and visualisation methods to interpret and gain actionable insights from live monitoring data collected in the residential environment, as well as providing recommendations for household decision support.

You will be expected to take the lead on addressing the following project objectives:

- Communicate with industrial partners and wider stakeholders to understand business needs, challenges and opportunities for digital innovations focusing on decarbonisation and reduction of domestic water use, and to effectively transform them into addressable technical problems and use cases.
- Develop replicable data science approaches for a suite of identified technical problems (e.g. non-intrusive water use disaggregation) that help improve the understanding of household consumption, inform behaviour change and demand-side interventions and, reduce water consumption and associated GHG emissions.
- Visualise and make sense of sensor measurements and outputs/benefits from the development such as real-time water activity events, water and energy efficiency indicators, carbon index and advice/tips for water-saving and carbon reduction.

We are seeking a passionate, highly motivated individual who has demonstrable communication skills, who is a consummate team-player and has the ability to produce high quality academic and experimental outputs under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). You should have excellent interpersonal skills, with an aptitude for building meaningful working relationships with our internal and external stakeholders.

As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles. These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.

Key Accountabilities
- Understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications
- Prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences
- Publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder
- Assist with the development of research objectives and proposals
- Conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder
- Work with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions
- Liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration
- Plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute
