Job description

**Organisation**

The Judicial Office (JO) is a unique branch of the civil service, independent from the machinery which supports the Government, and dedicated to supporting the judiciary as the third arm of the state. We promote and safeguard judicial independence to maintain confidence in the rule of law. We are answerable not to Ministers but instead, through our Chief Executive, to the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales and the Senior President of Tribunals as we help them to fulfil their responsibilities to the judiciary.

We support c.22,000 judicial office holders, providing policy, legal and handling advice, and operational support. This includes advice on judicial leadership, support with relationships with Government and Parliament, assistance with justice sector reform, judicial education and training, comms, and HR.

**Overview**

This is a permanent HEO post in the Strategy and Modernisation Team.

New entrants to the Civil Service will be expected to join on the minimum of the pay range.

Existing Civil Servants will have their salary calculated in accordance with the Department’s pay on transfer / pay on promotion rules.

The role is based in Royal Courts of Justice, London, with some remote working in line with JO policy and according to business need.

**Overview of the Team**

This advertisement is for a Higher Executive Officer (HEO) in the Strategy and Modernisation Team. The Strategy and Modernisation Team sits at the centre of the Judicial Office to advise, facilitate and implement key strategic policies for the modernisation of the judiciary. The team consists of several individual strands which support on jurisdiction-specific projects in each of the Criminal, Family, Civil and Tribunals jurisdiction, alongside two additional cross-jurisdictional strands which support the delivery of the Lady Chief Justice’s strategic priorities, such as the Modern Judiciary project and Working Practices Review.

The jurisdiction-specific strands of the team work closely and collaboratively with the Private Offices of their relevant senior judges, and this HEO role will involve developing close working relationships with the Private Offices of the Master of the Rolls and the Deputy Head of Civil Justice and the Private Office of the President of the Family Division. They will also provide secretariat support for judicial engagement and working groups in the £1.3 billion HMCTS Reform Programme: a role which will involve liaising closely with senior judges to ensure judicial views and expertise are integrated effectively into these projects.
