Lecturer in The History of The Americas

Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

You will join a dynamic core team of historians of the Americas that includes Dr Andrew Heath (political, social, and spatial history of nineteenth-century North America), Dr Rosie Knight (slavery, women and race in the southern US), Dr Caroline Pennock (Indigenous, especially Aztec-Mexica, Spanish American and Atlantic history) and Dr Simon Toner (US foreign policy in the Cold War; the Vietnam War). More broadly, the department has a flourishing group of Global Historians. There are also numerous thematic clusters and centres in the Department and across the University in which to participate, including the Department’s five thematic research hubs (Body and Mind, Migration and Identity, Transmission of Ideas, Slavery, and Political Engagement), the Centre for Contemporary and Modern History (CoMo), and Medical Humanities Sheffield.

You will have teaching and research strengths within your field and be expected to contribute to the Department’s presence within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the wider University and, through outreach and knowledge exchange, in Sheffield and beyond. The willingness to communicate to a variety of audiences beyond the purely academic is also useful for this position.

We have an international reputation for high quality and innovative learning and teaching, delivered by staff who are both committed to providing an outstanding student experience and who are at the cutting edge of research in their own disciplines. The Department of History is regularly ranked highly in the National Student Survey and we pride ourselves on our commitment to a diverse curriculum, small classes and research-led teaching. We are deeply committed to public outreach: we have strong relationships with schools, engagement with a range of partners in the local community and lively department blog. We are a friendly and inclusive department with good relations between academics and support staff.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
