Lecturer/senior Lecturer in Medical Computing

Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

This is an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Medical Computing, in a role that combines academic research, translation of your work into clinical impact, and teaching.

Affiliated both with the Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH), you will combine academic and NHS-based knowledge, skills, and expertise within the broad field of clinical computing. Specifically, you will develop and implement technological solutions to support the delivery of more effective and more efficient healthcare. The role will have a non-exclusive focus, at a patient-level, on mobile health and personalisation, and at a system-level, on the intelligent use of data in line with future health and care strategic plans.

This is a fantastic opportunity to grow a translational research team comprising students, Research Associates and NHS personnel. In the University, you will work with the Pervasive Computing Research Group in the Department of Computer Science. In STH, you will be hosted by the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department. You will also develop and deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Sheffield provides a stimulating environment for computer science research. In the recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 99% of our research was rated in the highest two categories (4* and 3*), meaning that it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent. Half of our research outputs were judged to be world-leading. We were rated as 8th in the UK (out of 90 institutions) for the quality of our research environment, and 70% of our impact was judged to be outstanding.

STH is one of the UK’s biggest providers of integrated hospital and community-based healthcare, providing a comprehensive range of local and tertiary services to the residents of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Mid Yorkshire and North Derbyshire and also some highly specialised services to all parts of England.

You will conduct research to the highest standards. This will include securing research funding, publishing in high impact journals, supervision of research students and research project management. As a teacher, you will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for high-quality teaching by designing, delivering and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in computer science.

The post is supported by a generous start-up package including funds for equipment/travel and a PhD studentship (covering UK tuition fee and stipend for 3.5 years).
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly place to work, where mutual respect for diversity and equality is a shared value. We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience. The Department of Computer Science holds a Silver Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.
