**Job summary**:
Government has set out a vision to strengthen the _UK's_ position as a global _science_ and technology _superpower_ putting science at the heart of UK international strategy. Defra and Defra Group which includes Defra’s Public Sector Research Establishments, including for example, Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew commission a huge array of science and world-class research and evidence.

Making the most of this world class science is at the heart of the role on offer, leading Defra's Chief Scientific Adviser's work to expand the international scientific capacity and capabilities of the Department to meet its challenging objectives.

**Job description**:
In collaboration with others, the post-holder will lead a team to:

- Provide line management of a team of 1 x HEO(D) and 2 x SSOs, supporting wellbeing and a positive team environment
- Provide strategic leadership to the team, setting a clear direction that the team can buy into and see their part in delivering
- Work closely with Defra Group science and policy teams to help expand and maximise the impact of Defra’s and Defra Group international R&D, science, and innovation partnerships to support Defra and HMG objectives
- Work closely with Defra international strategy leads to make science and R&D a stronger component of Defra’s international portfolio
- Work with other government departments, particularly FCDO, to support delivery of international science partnership activities and initiatives, including for example, the Agriculture Break through Agenda
- Enable Defra staff to access the best available international evidence to inform their decisions
- Support the delivery of scientific content into Defra’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) Research and Development (R&D) programme, Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate (GCBC)
- Contribute to wider Central Science Division objectives, where appropriate

This means that Defra new joiners will be located alongside existing colleagues in offices a short distance away from Nobel House in our other office at 2 Marsham St, London.

To work from 2 Marsham Street, you will require the higher level of CTC clearance. Therefore, confirmation of appointment to the advertised post will be dependent upon successful CTC clearance being confirmed as part of pre-employment checks.

- Newcastle - Lancaster House;
- Bristol - Horizon House (Please note that space at this office is limited and it may not be possible for all Policy roles to be recruited to this location);
- London - Nobel House and 2 Marsham Street.

Travel and subsistence will not be paid for travel to a base office location.
