The post is a full-time Substantive Consultant post, specialising in Corneal, commencing November 2024. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Main duties of the job
  1. To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service, specialising in Corneal
  2. To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  3. To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  4. To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  5. To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
  6. To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division and the Trust.

Job responsibilities
  1. To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to patients presenting to the Ophthalmology service.
  2. To provide a General Ophthalmology service for patients alongside the other members of the department.
  3. To provide a Corneal service within the Gloucestershire Hospitals, in partnership with the rest of the ophthalmic, orthoptic and optometric teams.
  4. To examine and treat such patients.
  5. To support the clinical decision-making of junior medical and nursing staff.
  6. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols.
Teaching/Training (as agreed with Specialty Director)
  1. To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of Modernising Medical Careers and related requirements.
  2. The appointee will also take a full role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including clinical meetings and tutorials. Medical students are currently taken from several universities, but the Clinical Academy based at the University of Bristol is expected to provide the majority of undergraduates in future.
  3. Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
  4. The department subscribes to a wide range of journals and there are good medical libraries at both Gloucester and Cheltenham with full literature search facilities. The department is part of a Trust-wide intranet system and is well served for literature search and other internet functions.
Audit and Clinical Governance (as agreed with Specialty Doctor)
  1. To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others' clinical practice in response to new clinical developments.
  2. To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics.
  3. To be involved in risk management and quality assurance.
  4. To remain up to date and engaged in CPD as per RCOphth guidelines.
  5. To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.
  6. To undertake all work in accordance with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies.
  7. To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME requirements.
  8. To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process.
  9. To participate in the Trust's annual Appraisal process.
  10. To adhere to the Trust's Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.
Management (as agreed with Specialty Director)
  1. To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs.
  2. To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department.
  3. To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary.
  4. To attend regional and national meetings as necessary.
  5. To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
Teamwork
  1. To work within the framework of team decisions.
  2. To participate in an inclusive approach to working with other providers of ophthalmic care within the wider NHS health community in the county.
  3. To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.
Strategic Development

Currently, Ophthalmic surgical services are provided at Cheltenham General and Tewkesbury Hospitals. Outpatient services are delivered at 10 sites. Both the siting and style of service delivery are under constant review and will change in coming years to deliver the services required by the community.

Accountability
  1. The post-holder will be immediately accountable to the Corneal lead, Specialty Director and Divisional Lead.
  2. The post-holder will be expected to undertake appraisal and to respond to any identified development needs.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Clinical Experience
  • Evidence of corneal ophthalmology fellowship training
  • Clinical training and experience in general ophthalmology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
  • Evidence of experience with high volume cataract surgery. Fully audited complication data for last 200 cases.
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
Management and Administrative Experience
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate
  • Evidence of recent CME activity and satisfactory career progression.
  • Knowledge of principles of audit with evidence of participation.
  • Completion of a management course or programme
Research, Teaching and Training Experience
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff and willingness to teach students, junior medical staff and other professionals
  • Proven teaching ability.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proven track record in research and willingness to undertake further research
Personal Attributes
  • Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
  • Ability to provide a role model and to inspire and develop junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of the directorate and to balance individual requirements against those of the directorate and the Trust as a whole.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and ability to organise own CME and CPD needs.
  • To attend outlying hospitals as required and ability to fulfil travelling requirements associated with the post.
  • Prepared to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the base hospital (CGH).
  • Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments.
  • Health issues must not inhibit the applicant from carrying out their clinical duties.
