Newbattle Abbey College attracts many students who have experienced disadvantage, including a high proportion with disabilities and care experience. We are seeking a Student Wellbeing and Support Lead who possesses a deep sensitivity to the unique needs of our students and has a proven track record of supporting those facing challenges in their pursuit of academic success. By fostering an environment of genuine acceptance and through the use of physical activity and group and one-to-one support sessions, SOHK enables people to find meaning and purpose in life. All of SOHK's activities are underpinned by an evidence-based sport for development framework called the 5Cs.
This role is centered around helping the pupils we work with increase their wellbeing and self-awareness; we work with cohorts of around 20 pupils from S1 until they reach S3. The pupils will be chosen by the school and will typically be the ‘hardest to reach’ young people. We will work with them for half a day every week, delivering rugby training and classroom sessions on subjects such as growth mindset, goal setting, and choices. We also have weekly 1:1s with every pupil. The program will be evaluated by SOHK staff, teachers, parents, and the pupils themselves.
Lead on, plan, facilitate, and deliver wellbeing and personal development sessions.
Providing information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their learning, behavior, and attendance.
Providing feedback to pupils and school staff in relation to progress, achievements, behaviors, and attendance.
Assisting in the monitoring and evaluating of all pupils on the course. Being aware and supporting differences and ensuring all pupils on the course have equal access to the mentoring program. Being aware of, and complying with, policies and procedures relating to child protection; confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the programs manager.
Training SOHK staff to enhance program delivery.
Safeguarding children effectively - using SOHK and school’s policies, referring concerns appropriately to the SOHK and school leads.
Knowledge & understanding of the developmental stages of children and young people and appropriate intervention approaches.
Ability to build rapport with young people with a variety of needs.
Proven skills and experience in engaging with challenging children and young people.
Be able to communicate a positive, caring attitude, and actively listen to the child or young person and others involved in their care.
Willingness to undertake research or audit in relevant fields in discussion with the SOHK Leadership Team.
Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant professional discipline (e.g. teaching, social work, psychology, occupational therapy).
Knowledge of rugby and the benefits it has for young people.
Experience of delivering in a classroom setting to a large group of young people.
Permanent Term Time Only contract with a salary of £27,720 pro rata.

The role involves leading the development and expansion of Dogs for Good’s work in Scotland, ensuring engagement with relevant team members and partners to maximize success. Key responsibilities include updating the 2019 business case overview to assess feasibility and demand, managing the current partnership with Alzheimer Scotland for the Dementia Dog project, and researching and developing new delivery partnerships and funding opportunities specific to Scotland.
Additionally, the role requires creating a volunteer model to support work in Scotland, in collaboration with the Head of Volunteering and Community Engagement. Establishing a communications plan to promote Dogs for Good in Scotland and engage new audiences is also essential. Line management of the team in Scotland is a critical aspect, providing training and support for staff and volunteers as well as tracking and measuring progress against key targets and ensuring alignment with organizational plans for hub development.
The key deliverables include an updated feasibility project and development plan for Scotland, continued development of the Dementia Dog project, establishing strong links with new delivery partners, securing income from new funding sources, promoting the Dogs for Good brand in Scotland, and ensuring that objectives in Scotland align with the wider organizational hub plans.
The successful candidate will bring together the knowledge and experience of colleagues to lead the design and strategic planning for Dogs for Good’s work across Scotland. With experience in community-led practice, network development, and/or partnership building, this role is ideal for a self-starter with an interest in innovative social and healthcare outcomes at the community level.
The role is home-based, within Scotland, with occasional travel across Scotland, and to the center in Banbury.
