As a Junior Charge Nurse/Sister for the enhanced care and retention team you will provide visible and operational leadership. You will actively lead the provision of enhanced care within the Trust from a nursing/clinical perspective. This will include working with patients who are experiencing acute illness/injury, confusion, dementia, mental health crisis, falls risks and/or vulnerability whilst in hospital. You will undertake evidenced based clinical/risk assessments to identify the provision of person-centred enhanced care, formulating care plans and offering advice/ expertise to wider teams. You will provide operational leadership to a group of Senior Healthcare Assistants to deliver the service. On a day-to-day basis you will utilise resources effectively and efficiently to provide enhanced care, prioritising need across the Trust.


Another important aspect of the role is to promote retention amongst Senior Healthcare Assistants through engagement, support and implementing a range of initiatives. You will promote the healthcare role and identify opportunities to staff to rotate into the enhanced care team including Students, Learners, and Apprentices.


You will promote a therapeutic approach to enhanced care, promoting patient choice, independence, and person centric care. You will also promote effective communication with patients, their significant others and within the nursing, medical and AHP teams.

Promotes and implements evidence-based approaches to enhanced care and workforce retention


Promotes person centred approaches to providing therapeutic enhanced care


Promotes compassionate care amongst the team and encourages independence and choice with those who use the service


Advocates for Patients and their significant others with other nursing, medical and AHP professionals


Works collaboratively with healthcare colleagues to deliver person/outcome centred care


Bases clinical and nursing decisions on robust assessments, including risk assessments to make informed decisions


Evaluates nursing risk to make informed decisions in relation to care


Works in accordance with the NMC Code as a Registered Nurse


Promotes parity of esteem in both physical and mental health care


Identifies and delivers educational opportunities in relation to enhanced care


Actively engages with Senior Healthcare Assistants and delivers retention initiatives as informed by the Enhanced Care and Retention Manager


Maintains clinical credibility and knowledge/skills in relation to dementia, delirium, confusion, mental health, falls and physical/psychological deterioration


Maintains accurate and contemporary documentation in relation to all aspects of care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation


Practices in a legal and ethical way in relation to enhanced care

Operationalises resources within financial constraints and budgets as informed by the Enhanced Care and Retention Manager

Actively promotes Student/Learner/Apprentice placements within the service
Education, Training & Qualifications
Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
Clinical/nursing experience of delivering enhanced Care
Holds a diploma in Nursing (Level 5)
Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to role
Has completed NMC aligned Practice Assessor and Supervisor Development
Clinical/nursing experience of delivering enhanced care

Holds a degree in Nursing or Professional Practice/Healthcare (example, BSc/BSc Hons) (Level 6)
Leadership qualification (RCN Leadership Programme/Academic Modules/NHSLA Awards)

Experience at of managing a staff related performance
Experience of financial management
Participation in clinical governance, research, and audit
Evidence of work based (local) teaching and learning
Managing and supporting staff and patients through the complaints, compliments, and concerns processes
Knowledge of contemporary nursing issues

IT Skills, including Microsoft works and Microsoft Teams
Key Competencies/ Personal Qualities & Attributes
Physical effort - when participating in clinical care
Willingness to work flexibly according to service needs including on call, evenings, and weekends
