We are seeking a Medical Officer (Aeromedical Examiner and Occupational Physician) to carry out regulatory medicals for the Aeromedical Centre and provide expert advice for our comprehensive Occupational Health Service (OHS).

The role is primarily based at Swanwick Centre, Hampshire with regular visits to Prestwick Centre, Ayrshire. Travel to other NATS Airports sites will be required, including within the UK and Gibraltar. We have adopted agile working to provide greater flexibility depending on operational requirements.

Other duties include:
  • Provide specialist occupational medical advice, contributing to working groups and policy development. Clinical case management of referrals from managers
  • Provide Aeromedical Examiner advice to operational ATCOs, participating in Duty Doctor and after hours on call rota
  • Perform renewal medicals at various NATS sites in line with business requirements, including regular clinics at Prestwick Centre, Swanwick Centre, and Airports
  • Perform other statutory medical examinations
  • Lead the administrative team and assist oversight of day-to-day clinic operations. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer and deputising as required
  • Perform post-offer health screening for new employees, ensuring minimal delay to recruiting
  • Provide recommendations to pension and income protection schemes for potential ill health retirement cases
  • Contribute to OHS policy and processes, military aeromedical liaison, CAA audits and research
  • Provide educational support to Portfolio Pathway / CESR applicants and input for departmental educational activities

Essential Skills and experience:
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK
  • Must hold full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • Desirable: on the GMC Specialist Register in Occupational Medicine. AFOM/DOccMed holders may be considered
  • Experience leading teams, collaborating with business areas, and managing people effectively
  • Current or eligible for CAA Class 1 Approved Medical Examiner status according to criteria: Guidance on AME Certification | Civil Aviation Authority (caa.co.uk)
  • Desirable: have experience in post-graduate medical education e.g. as Clinical Supervisor or Educational Supervisor.
  • Flexible, resourceful, able to carry out medicals on site as a solo AME
  • Outstanding communication & interpersonal skills able to engage on a 1 to 1 basis and addressing groups of people, and adapt style to develop team members
  • Ability to produce letters and reports in accordance with Faculty of Occupational Medicine guidance and case summaries for CAA case referrals
