Oxford, United Kingdom Aurora Energy Research Full time
Research Associate, Global Energy Markets - Natural Gas, Coal, and Oil (EMEA focus)

Department: Research

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Oxford, UK

Description

Based in Oxford, you will be a part of Aurora's Global Energy Markets research team - producing our ongoing research and publications, developing new analysis, identifying client needs, and continuously enhancing the service we provide.

We are looking for an Associate who will be a senior member of the team leading projects, speaking to clients, and representing the company externally. The scope of this role will be on Global Energy Markets (gas, oil, and coal), with a focus on Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), in addition to broader analysis of global markets. The role involves keeping abreast of, and providing insightful client reports on, key developments across global energy commodities markets, including consideration of how energy commodities will be affected by decarbonisation policies and the emergence of low-carbon technologies.

The Global Energy Markets team produces Aurora's central outlook and scenarios for the development of gas, oil, and coal markets, which underpin Aurora's analysis of power markets. Although the role is based in our Subscription Analytics team, the successful applicants would also play a role in supporting commodities-focused projects undertaken in our Advisory team - which in the past has included transactions and strategic advisory.

Aurora provides a dynamic, intellectually stimulating, and demanding yet supportive environment. Working as part of a close-knit team, you will enjoy autonomy, the opportunity to substantially influence major decisions in the energy sector, and the chance to grow into an industry expert. The position suits experienced analysts or consultants from top-tier strategic or economic consultancies, energy companies, financial services companies, or knowledge-driven firms or institutions. Prior experience in natural gas, energy markets, or macroeconomics is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Aurora's research in European, Middle Eastern, and African energy commodity markets and work closely with Aurora's modelling and power teams to develop regular market forecasts and novel analysis.
  • Research key short- and long-term market trends and conduct analysis of policy developments in the gas, coal, and oil markets, with a focus on EMEA.
  • Develop timely and rigorous quantitative analyses to enhance clients' decision making, e.g., in supporting financial transactions for energy assets.
  • Communicate findings to clients through meetings, calls, workshops, and conferences.
  • Contribute to Aurora's product development, by identifying new opportunities for intellectually interesting and commercially relevant areas of analysis, helping to expand our capabilities, subscription base, and impact.

What we are looking for

Required attributes:
  • At least three years of experience working with European natural gas, oil, or coal markets at an energy company, commodity price reporting agency, leading strategic or economic consultancy, energy trading house or brokerage, economic research institution, or financial services company.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyse, and interpret complex quantitative data and information.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy markets and commodities, particularly natural gas, oil, or coal.
  • Demonstrated success in project and process management in team-oriented environments.
  • Demonstrated success in managing a team to deliver time-critical projects.
  • Self-starter, entrepreneurial mind-set, and desire to grow the business.
  • Competence in data tools (e.g., SQL, PowerBI, advanced Excel).
  • Excellent written communication.
  • Native or professional-level competence in English.

Desirable attributes:
  • Experience working with or studying Middle Eastern or African energy markets, with a focus on natural gas, oil, or coal.
  • Demonstrated success in client-facing positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with both technical and non-technical parties.
  • Knowledge of key financial metrics and economic principles (NPV, IRR, DCF).
  • Academic or practical experience forecasting macroeconomic indicators.
  • First class degree from a top university in a quantitative subject (Energy Science, Economics, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Finance).
  • Competence in advanced data analytics (e.g., R, Python, GAMS, Matlab).
  • Relevant Master's degree or PhD.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in a European language or Arabic.

What we offer
  • The opportunity to substantially influence major decisions in the energy sector
  • Direct engagement with clients through Aurora conferences, workshops and webinars
  • The opportunity to grow into a publicly visible industry expert
  • A fun, informal, collaborative and international work culture
  • A competitive salary package
  • Access to regular coaching and mentoring sessions and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals
  • Access to the Aurora Academy, our training programme offering a range of opportunities to develop your skills within the responsibilities of your role and within the wider context of the industry.
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), offering a complete support network that offers expert advice and compassionate guidance 24/7/365, covering a wide range of personal and professional aspects

At Aurora we will consider all requests for flexible working. For most roles, the following types of flexibility are usually possible: a hybrid model of remote and in-office working and flexible start and finish times. Please talk to us during the interview about the flexibility we could offer and we will be happy to explore the best available option for you.

The Company is committed to the principle that no employee or job applicant shall receive unfavourable treatment on grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity.

The successful candidate would start as soon as possible. The team will review applications as they are received. Salary will be competitive with experience.

To apply, please submit your Résumé / CV, a personal summary, your salary expectations and please inform us of your notice period.
