The Role

The Major Projects team is part of the Estates Acquisitions & Disposals family. The team are responsible for defining, and delivering, the future use and redevelopment of large surplus MoD sites and determining the eventual disposal strategy for them. Involvement ranges from early assessment work to MoD closure and vacation, through to final freehold disposal. Often former major barracks and airfields the team promote sites through the town planning process, working in close engagement with regional and local stakeholders. Involvement continues through all stages of design into delivery and can include procuring and setting up development management agreements with industry partners and investors. From thereon in there is a role in scrutinising all aspects of delivery and disposal, and which sees these ex-MoD sites comprehensively redeveloped to provide new homes, community facilities, schools, leisure, and employment land.

Job description

Main Responsibilities


The Senior Surveyor role oversees and manages a wide range of programmes and services alongside the provision of subject matter expert advice and communications with all key stakeholders.�


The work is extremely varied and wide ranging, but key activities for the role includes:

Working closely with private sector partners on large scale regeneration projects.�Scrutinising proposals across all areas of project delivery including annual business plans, contract performance, interim third-party use, greenspace management, town and country planning submissions and disposal strategies.�Concluding sale and purchase and other transactional agreements.�Contributing and reporting within business area and wider including DIO Board and Ministers.�External communications and liaison with key stakeholders.�

This role has regional responsibilities within Southern areas of England. DIO Estates main office locations within this area are Andover, Portsmouth, and Sandhurst, with smaller DIO sites spread throughout the regions. � Alongside the advertised locations, other DIO locations may be offered.



We are offering a flexible base location(s) for this role, and we will endeavour to make one of our DIO Offices your duty station. �All sites will be considered whilst ensuring the location of the successful candidate can still meet the regional responsibilities, business and travel requirements of the role. Work location will be agreed once the successful candidate has been selected. Please confirm your location on your application form. �



The successful candidate will be expected to regularly attend their chosen office location and will involve weekly attendance to the office for face-to-face meetings and collaboration. The role will involve regular travel to sites within their region and occasionally UK wide for meetings and/or site inspections.�


If travelling outside your base location for duty reasons, you will have access to flights, hire cars, rail tickets and overnight accommodation. You can also claim 45 pence per mile should you choose to use your own vehicle for business travel.


Travel may be required to carry out site visits where you may go on MOD Establishments, residential estates, building sites, agricultural land, training areas and firing ranges etc.


Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. �Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. DIO Business Area � Estates


The Defence estate is one of the largest landholdings in the UK and covers an estimated of the UK land mass (200,000+ ha). This is complemented by a significant UK Defence presence overseas.
Estates are the in-house real estate team within the DIO (part of the UK Ministry of Defence) supporting infrastructure needs across a high-profile Public Estate. We acquire, manage, safeguard, and dispose of Defence real estate. Our unique customer knowledge and insight of the Defence Estate enables our in-house team of property professionals to provide in-depth advice to our Military customers.


The Team

Acquisitions and Disposals (A&D) is the in-house Estates team responsible for disposing of all surplus MOD land and property to realise capital receipts for re-investment in the retained MOD estate. The team manages an extensive pipeline of sites for disposal supporting major infrastructure programmes. Theteam also acquire land and property for MOD projects when required.�



The Major Projects Team sit within A&D and have a somewhat unique position and opportunity of redefining former major barracks and airfields into large newcivilian communities. The team promote the former MOD sites through the entire town planning process, working in close engagement with regional andlocal stakeholders to design large mixed use redevelopment schemes that are of local and regional significance. The schemes provide new homes,community facilities, schools, leisure and employment land, delivered over a period of 10-15 years. The teamare able towork on these sites through allstages of design and into delivery, procuring and setting up development management agreements with industry partners and investors and playing afirst-hand role in all aspects of delivery. Dealing with Property matters, and Estates is the backbone of what we do, but delivering legacy and long-termregeneration value is what drives us and is the core of what we really do.�
