Job summary

About the Role:

This role provides the opportunity to take on an important role within Scotland�s sole prosecution service; providing support to our lawyers in making recommendations on criminal proceedings in cases. If you have a passion and understanding of law and justice, with previous experience in legal studies or investigative work, then our Case Preparer post will allow you to take on an important role within Scotland�s sole prosecution service; to support our lawyers in making recommendations on criminal proceedings in cases.�

Within the team, you will be working collaboratively with your peers and a range of knowledgeable external stakeholders to provide support to the business in delivering justice for local communities.

You must be passionate about serving the public interest at all times; organised and confident in taking decisions; working autonomously and making recommendations based on assessment of all the available evidence; and be committed to meeting the diverse needs of victims and witnesses.

We have several posts on offer in which you can expect to join new and growing teams where you will be directed and supported to take charge of your caseload and development. In your initial weeks in the role, you can expect to spend time a couple of days a week in the office, meeting your team and starting your training, you will also have the flexibility to work remotely. You will also be provided with specific digital training packages in conjunction with one to one on the job learning.

This is an exciting role based within a very dynamic team who promote continuous learning and where no two days are the same.

Job description

As a Case Preparer, you will prepare cases effectively for court and deal sensitively and appropriately with victims and witnesses.

You will be responsible for an allocated caseload. You will produce high quality case packages, ensuring the best possible evidence has been gathered and collated from a range of sources. As part of this collation, you will be required to interact with victims and witnesses of crime.

You can expect to work with colleagues across COPFS to prepare evidence in appropriate formats ensuring the proper presentation of cases for our prosecutors. You will work closely with Crown Counsel, Police, Defence Agents and other Support Services to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of evidence and keeping relevant contacts apprised of the progress of cases.

As a Case Preparer, you may be rotated into roles that involve work on serious crime, deaths and sexual offences. Applicants must be prepared to undertake work of this nature. Vicarious Trauma Support and in-house training will be provided to support successful candidates.

General responsibilities and duties:

Direct, instruct and manage investigations with Police and other agencies.Follow protocols and key policies to meet business requirements.Prepare cases effectively for court.Work sensitively and appropriately with Victims and Witnesses and bereaved relatives.Regularly understand and adapt to changes in process to improve efficiency and deliver on service improvements.

Role specific responsibilities and duties:

Prepare serious, complex and high-level solemn cases efficiently and within allocated timescales.Collaborate regularly with internal and external stakeholders such as Crown Counsel, Police Scotland, various agencies, victims and witnesses and bereaved relatives to assist in with case progression.Consider and analyse evidence, providing instruction to various stakeholders if further evidence is required.Present appropriate recommendations to Principal Deputes and Advocate Deputes based on findings.Prepare precognitions in agreed styles and formats using Microsoft packages and other internal software packages, ensuring high standards and data handling.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will be organised with the motivation and drive to improve the lives of the citizens of Scotland by playing a vital part in our role in prosecuting crime. You will be familiar with our court processes, how cases are prepared, as well as our business processes and systems.

Communication skills will be key, knowing how to tailor your style to your audience. You will encounter witnesses and victims who have had traumatic experiences and be exposed to potentially sensitive or harmful material in relation to this. As a result, you should be able to exhibit resilience in addition to empathy and compassion.

In preparing evidence we will need you to showcase in-depth levels of analysis and objectivity. You will be confident in your decision making and disciplined in your organisation to meet relevant deadlines.
