Inverness, Highland, United Kingdom Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service Full time

Job Overview

About the Position:

This position offers a significant opportunity to contribute to Scotland's exclusive prosecution service by assisting our legal professionals in evaluating criminal cases. If you possess a strong interest in law and justice, along with prior experience in legal studies or investigative roles, the Case Preparer position will enable you to play a crucial part in supporting our legal team in their case assessments.

In this collaborative environment, you will engage with your colleagues and various knowledgeable external partners to aid the organization in delivering justice to the community.

We seek individuals who are dedicated to serving the public interest, organized, and confident in making informed decisions. You should be capable of working independently and making recommendations based on a thorough analysis of available evidence, while also being committed to addressing the diverse needs of victims and witnesses.

Multiple positions are available within expanding teams, where you will receive guidance and support to manage your caseload and professional growth. Initially, you will spend time in the office for team meetings and training, with the flexibility to work remotely. Comprehensive digital training packages will be provided alongside personalized on-the-job learning.

This role is exciting and dynamic, situated within a team that values continuous learning, ensuring that each day presents new challenges.

Role Responsibilities

As a Case Preparer, your primary responsibility will be to prepare cases thoroughly for court while handling interactions with victims and witnesses with sensitivity and professionalism.

You will manage an assigned caseload, producing high-quality case documentation that ensures all pertinent evidence is collected and organized from various sources. This will involve direct communication with victims and witnesses of crimes.

Your collaboration with colleagues across the organization will be essential in preparing evidence in suitable formats, ensuring that cases are presented effectively for our prosecutors. You will work closely with Crown Counsel, law enforcement, defense attorneys, and other support services to guarantee the timely and accurate delivery of evidence while keeping relevant parties informed about case progress.

Potential Role Variations:

As a Case Preparer, you may be assigned to roles involving serious crimes, fatalities, and sexual offenses. Candidates should be prepared to engage in such work. Support for vicarious trauma and in-house training will be available for successful applicants.

General Duties:

  • Direct and manage investigations in collaboration with law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Adhere to protocols and policies to fulfill organizational requirements.
  • Effectively prepare cases for court proceedings.
  • Engage sensitively with victims, witnesses, and bereaved families.
  • Continuously adapt to process changes to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

Specific Duties:

  • Efficiently prepare serious, complex, and high-profile cases within designated timelines.
  • Regularly collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including Crown Counsel and law enforcement, to facilitate case progression.
  • Analyze evidence and provide instructions to stakeholders when additional information is needed.
  • Present informed recommendations to senior legal staff based on your findings.
  • Prepare documentation in specified formats using Microsoft Office and other internal software, ensuring high standards of data management.

Note: This list is not exhaustive, and additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will be organized, motivated, and committed to enhancing the lives of Scotland's citizens through effective crime prosecution. Familiarity with court processes and case preparation, as well as knowledge of organizational systems, is essential.

Strong communication skills are vital, with the ability to adjust your approach based on your audience. You will encounter individuals who have experienced trauma and may be exposed to sensitive materials. Therefore, resilience, empathy, and compassion are crucial attributes.

In preparing evidence, you will need to demonstrate thorough analytical skills and objectivity. Confidence in decision-making and discipline in organization to meet deadlines are essential.

Essential Qualifications:

Applicants should possess the following competencies:
