We are seeking an Active Travel Business Engagement Lead to work within the Sustainability, Transport and Climate Change team to deliver a number of exciting sustainable travel projects to help meet the Council's Strategic Commitments which include

Duties of the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive colleague who is passionate about active travel and who can champion and lead on engagement with local businesses to raise awareness of the many positive business benefits that promoting active travel can bring.

You will work closely with colleagues and partners including the Colchester Travel Plan Club hosted by the Council as well as the Business Improvement District. Through these partnerships you will support the local business community in embracing the benefits of active travel, and in taking personal action to promote active travel within their workplaces resulting in more employees walking, cycling and using public transport to access employment and for business travel.

You will also work with partners to encourage and support a better understanding of wider plans to improve public areas and the city centre environment to support healthy lives and active travel.

Much of your work will include talking with businesses and business leaders, listening to their needs, signposting them to local support services and resources and then working more closely with them to implement workplace travel plans.

You will also raise awareness and promote the many services provided by the council and other local organisations that support active travel to increase uptake as well as grow services and ensure they are financially sustainable. For example, the award-winning CAReless Pollution Campaign, the Secure Bike Park, shared pay as you go transport such as the electric car club and eBikes/eCargo bikes and cargo bike delivery services.

Qualifications and skills required

To be successful in this role you will be passionate and knowledgeable about active travel and the financial, health and environmental benefits that walking, cycling, shared transport and public transport can bring to a business and its employees.

We hope that you are familiar with how the commercial and private sector operate. You will be a confident and excellent communicator with an ability to engage people as well as an active listener. You will be experienced in engaging and working with various types of businesses and stakeholders.

Persuasive and approachable, you will be able to build collaborative and effective relationships with city centre businesses. You will identify barriers to active travel and look at how through working with partners, promoting existing services, signposted and raising awareness, these barriers can be overcome. Through your work you will encourage and support businesses to commit to promoting active travel in their workplaces.

Being proactive, adaptable and the ability to use your initiative will be essential. You will be able to manage a diverse and multifaceted workload. You will work with businesses and colleagues to develop creative solutions using a co-design approach to ensure they are sustainable in the long term without ongoing funding input.

Monitoring and evaluating the progress and impact of our projects is essential to the role and you will have experience of using a range of research techniques to gather, evaluate, analyse, and present data.

We expect you to have 3 A levels at grade C or above (or equivalent) and have relevant experience or a qualification in sales, social marketing or communications, as well as holding a project management qualification and/or relevant experience.
