Welfare Officer

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Peterhouse is the oldest College in Cambridge (founded in 1284) and is also among the smallest (currently 291 undergraduates; 176 postgraduates; 43 Fellows). The College provides accommodation for almost all its Junior Members either on or near the main College site; a significant proportion of the Fellowship also live in. The College is, therefore, characterised by a greater degree of regular interaction between Senior and Junior Members than is the case in some larger Colleges. It is a vibrant community, with many active clubs and societies, and a strong tradition of table fellowship. The College welcomes men and women of all faiths and nationalities.

The Welfare Officer is expected to be available in a pastoral capacity to all members of the College community. The Welfare Officer will be expected to engage actively with the College community at all levels, both by supporting College events (concerts, plays, speaker meetings, etc.), and by informal interaction with Senior Members, Junior Members and staff alike.

The Welfare Officer, who reports to the Senior Tutor, oversees and coordinates the non-medical welfare-related activities offered by the College. The Welfare Officer also has an important advisory and signposting role in advising students about what welfare resources (medical and non-medical) are available within the College and University and directing them (as required) towards the specialist provision available within the College through the College Nurse and the Mental Health Adviser.

The post holder should be available for confidential conversations with students, and for confidential consultation by staff and senior members as necessary, and will make referrals (as appropriate) to the College Nurse and Mental Health Adviser.

You will have a very high level of emotional intelligence and empathy to gain the trust and respect of students and colleagues. You will have the ability to work with and relate to a wide cross-section of people, and the ability to handle complex pastoral situations and respect confidentiality. You will possess previous pastoral experience in a formal or informal context and have experience of living and working within a collegiate university.

You will enjoy:

  • Holiday entitlement is 25 days plus 8 bank and public holidays. A car parking space may be available, subject to capacity.
  • The College offers an auto-enrolled pension scheme to eligible employees, after 3 months' completed service. The scheme is the Cambridge Colleges Group Personal Pension Scheme (CCGPPS) with Aviva.
  • Lunch is provided free of charge when on duty over lunchtime and when the College kitchens are open.
  • The College offers a medical cashback scheme to staff.

The closing date for application is 8am on 30th June 2024.

The salary for the post is £30,220 (PS31) pro rata per annum, £15110 per annum)
