Data Curation Officers

Didcot, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom STFC - The Science and Technology Facilities Council Full time

Contract Type: 3 year fixed term contract

Hours: Full time/Part Time (minimum of 25 hours a week)

Benefits: 30 annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 2.5 privilege days + Christmas shut down + exceptional average salary pension + excellent work life balance

Location: STFC - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire or Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire

We have a new opportunity for three research officers to work on the curation of data and models within the DAFNI programme. These Data Curation Officers will work with the user community to maintain and evolve the collection of assets held in the DAFNI platform.

DAFNI is a key national facility which provides data and modelling environment to support research in the national infrastructure engineering community (e.g. Energy, Transport, Telecommunications, and Water systems). The DAFNI platform maintains a collection of data and computational models which are held in repositories catalogue and indexed with appropriate metadata.

DAFNI has a number of projects within its programme, including:

  • DAFNI Centre of Excellence for Resilience Analysis, working with researchers to explore issues of infrastructure resilience using computational modelling.
  • DAFNI-Data Infrastructure for National Infrastructure (DINI) looking at the opportunities and barriers to research data sharing within the infrastructure engineering domain
  • CROSSEU, a European project considering the risks and adaptations to climate change across Europe.
  • Centre for Greening Finance and Investment: a NERC funded project considering the impact of environmental change on the financial industry.

As a Data Curation Officer you will work across these projects, in particular contributing to a feasibility study on data sharing within the DAFNI-DINI project, and within a consortium of European partners in CROSSEU to identify and access appropriate data sources. You will also be encouraged to participate in community standards activities such as the Research Data Alliance.

To be successful you should have a deep understanding of research data and the value of data sharing and reuse, including the FAIR data principles, as well as an awareness of the obstacles and restrictions which researchers may encounter in publishing, accessing and reusing data, arising from both technical limitations and the social environment. You should also have an understanding of researcher needs and want to work closely with them to explore those needs. Knowledge of a research domain of interest to DAFNI (e.g. Infrastructure Engineering, Environmental Science) would be an advantage.

List of Duties / Work Program / Responsibilities

  • Liaise with DAFNI Project stakeholders nationally and internationally to identify data and modelling needs within their use cases.
  • Identify datasets and models with a potential high utility for DAFNI's infrastructure research community and make them available via the DAFNI platform.
  • Maintain a catalogue of models and datasets on the DAFNI platform, identifying under-provisioned areas for infrastructure research.
  • Populate appropriate metadata for assets to improve the quality of annotation for search, discovery and reuse.
  • Enrich the coverage of the metadata supported for data and other assets on the platform in line with community best practises, working to implement changes with the DAFNI Development team.
  • Participate in community fora to share best practices and standards.

Essential skills and attributes

  • Working in a collaborative research environment.
  • Knowledge of standard methodology in research asset collection management.
  • Knowledge of technical and scientific metadata for annotation of research assets.
  • Knowledge of FAIR principles for research data sharing.
  • Knowledge of restrictions on data access, licensing and data sharing agreements.
  • Ability to work with partners for requirements elicitation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of research asset management tools, including repositories and catalogues, to support data curation.
  • Track record in responsibility for the delivery of project outputs.
  • Willingness to travel with overnight stays within the UK and internationally particularly within Europe.

And, alongside Mars landings and black holes, we also explore diverse, international projects in everything from science and engineering to computing and technology. Whether it's at the cutting edge or behind the scenes, our work is intellectually challenging. It's very often ground-breaking. And it's endlessly, irresistibly fascinating.
