The role

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to facilitate the successful delivery of the Avian Contact Study ), a Research England-funded study to inform public health policy around avian influenza. The duties involve managing, co-ordinating and advising on all administrative aspects such as planning, reporting, finance and budgets, recruitment and procurement.

The aims of the Avian Contact Study are to:

  • Determine if current public health policy is appropriate given increases in avian infections
  • Understand how important is avian influenza is to bird keepers in the UK
  • Identify what biosecurity measures are being taken to prevent spread
  • Design effective tools for engaging farmers and bird-keepers in a public health response
  • What might localised avian influenza outbreaks in the UK look like?

What will you be doing?

The postholder will take responsibility for delivering the Avian Contact Study, with support from other members of the study team, including Prof Ellen Brooks Pollock and Dr Amy Thomas, as well as working closely with other researchers and stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers (UKHSA, APHA) and members of the public. You will fully support core essential functions and assists in support of specialist/more complex activities for laboratory or a designated suite of laboratories. Typical duties would include: Carrying out experimental techniques, and recording data outputs, operating, servicing, maintenance and calibration of research equipment, recognise and resolve problems, including complex issues, e.g. fault diagnosis, process improvement.

You should apply if

You should apply if you have experience of working in a technical laboratory to include laboratory techniques, process improvement and problem solving. You will have excellent IT skills, and an ability to effectively use new software or IT systems when required. You will also possess excellent organisational skills, with the ability to deal with and prioritise a range of ongoing tasks at the same time, and to be able to cope under pressure.

Contract type: Fixed Term until 31/03/2025

Work pattern: Full time/ 1 FTE

Shift pattern: 35 hours per week
