Position Overview

The Parenteral Services Unit (PSU) at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Band 6 Lead Pharmacy Technician. This role offers an opportunity to enhance your technical skills while contributing to our dynamic aseptic unit, which specializes in providing cytotoxic chemotherapy and Parenteral Nutrition services.

Candidates must possess a recognized qualification in Pharmacy or Science Manufacturing Technician and hold registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or an equivalent scientific authority.

Exceptional candidates who may not fully meet all essential criteria may still be considered for a progressive Band 5-6 position.

Key Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of Senior Technicians, each assigned specific duties. This role includes distinct areas of responsibility as outlined below. The post holder will manage chemotherapy and PN coordination tasks according to a set schedule and is expected to effectively manage their time across various responsibilities.
  • Chemotherapy Coordination: Oversee the chemotherapy preparation service, taking the lead role while also providing support on additional days as needed in collaboration with fellow Chemotherapy Senior Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Parenteral Nutrition Coordination: Supervise the PN aseptic preparation service, working on a rotational basis with other PN Senior Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Inventory Management: Ensure effective stock control of Chemotherapy and/or PN drug lines in conjunction with other Senior Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Team Leadership: Assume management and supervisory responsibilities as detailed in the job description.

Qualifications and Training

Essential Qualifications

  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences / NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent, or Science Manufacturing Technician qualification including Level 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals Processing.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a pharmacy technician or relevant scientific body.
  • Accredited to perform pre- and in-process checks (Band 6).
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in aseptic preparation services following successful completion of Technician qualification, with specific experience in chemotherapy (Band 6).
  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in staff supervision and training (Band 6).

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in inventory management.

Skills and Abilities

Essential Skills

  • Strong team leadership and motivational skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills related to staff management, workflow, and documentation systems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills for effective liaison with PSU staff, other pharmacy areas, and clinical departments.
  • Competence in aseptic dispensing techniques.
