Head of Oversight Group Operational Risk

London, United Kingdom Nationwide Building Society Full time

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

We're navigating significant change at Nationwide. It's an exciting time as we evolve to a new future that sees us accelerate delivery of our strategic aims, value to our Members and engage colleagues around new ways of working.

At the same time we are investing in the Operational Risk Oversight team in the second line of defence. We are increasing the capacity, seniority, and capability of the team to ensure we are able to continue to add customer value by investigating, challenging, and influencing across the Society.

As Head of Operational Resilience and Third Party Risk Oversight , this Senior role provides a compelling opportunity to lead a part of the Operational Risk Oversight team, supporting the Operational Risk Oversight Director, who reports directly to the Chief Risk Officer as part of the independent Second Line Risk function.

We're looking for a talented individual to provide strategic leadership of our Operational Resilience and Third Party risk oversight agenda, working closely with the first line risk owners, Exco members, senior leadership teams, as well as partners across the Society's 3 Lines of Defence and UK Regulators.

Customers, understandably, expect services to be available when they want to use them, with a demand for an 'always on' capability. To meet these expectations, operational resilience is a fundamental part of the Society's strategy and continues to be a significant area of regulatory focus. Nationwide has identified the services that matter most to customers (Important Business Services), defined unacceptable levels of customer disruption, and continually assesses and tests for vulnerabilities and the effectiveness of incident recovery responses.

You and your team will play a critical role in ensuring Nationwide's operational resilience framework and Third Party Risk framework is robust, effective, and aligned with regulatory requirements. You'll be responsible for overseeing risk management practices related to operational resilience, business continuity, crisis management, and third party risk.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, at one of our offices. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here .

You will be expected to work from London or Swindon twice per week.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you'll be doing

Operational Resilience and use of our supply chain are closely linked. For a firm the size of Nationwide you cannot have one without the other. To provide services to customers and internal functions, Nationwide uses a network of third parties to support with areas such as IT infrastructure and support and back office processing. When outsourcing activities to third parties, Nationwide retains responsibility for all services and the associated risks. You and your team will play a critical role in ensuring Nationwide's operational resilience framework and Third Party Risk framework is robust, effective, and aligned with regulatory requirements. You'll be responsible for overseeing risk management practices related to operational resilience, business continuity, crisis management, and third party risk.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for:

  • To provide strategic leadership to the team in delivering its objective to provide assurance to executive management and the Board Risk Committee on the adequacy and effectiveness of risk management across the COO portfolio to mitigate key operational, regulatory and conduct risks.
  • Providing effective Oversight on operational resilience and third party risk activities, and relevant change initiatives to ensure that risks have been fully considered and agreed through appropriate governance. You will employ various approaches which include "Close and Continuous" oversight, and undertaking risk and control based "formal oversight reviews".
  • Through oversight of the Procurement function and the Third Party Risk team you will monitor the highest risk suppliers, their performance, and the effectiveness of the control environment employed to manage them.
  • Working with your team and key stakeholders to lead the second line oversight approach on Nationwide's achievement of relevant regulatory obligations. Primarily this includes; Operational Resilience SS1/21 and Outsourcing and Third Party Management SS2/21.
  • Assessing business area compliance against the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) requirements. The ERMF includes business and regulatory requirements on; risks, controls, policies, and scenario analysis.
  • Maintaining high value relationships at Exco / Exco -1 level with a sufficient depth of understanding of their business area deliverables, priorities and risks. You will ensure that the key priorities and risks are sufficiently prominent and accounted for.
  • Working collaboratively with partners across the 3LOD to simplify and strengthen Operational Resilience and Third Party management practices for the benefit of the Business and Society overall
  • Providing effective insight and presenting at risk and control governance forums/committee
  • Deputising for the Operational Risk Director and other senior members of the team as required

About you

  • This isn't a generic risk role. We will need you to have a demonstrable track record of risk and control leadership within a Retail Banking/Financial Services firm. You will have experience of providing oversight on both 3 rd Party Risk and Operational Resilience with a clear focus on regulation.
  • Ability to demonstrate decisiveness and sound judgement on a consistent basis. With strong critical thinking, you'll comprehend and assimilate information rapidly, break down complex problems and provide support and challenge to risk owners in a clear and understandable way to suit different audiences, from Board level through to wider colleague engagement.
  • Interpersonally, you will have experience of working on a regular basis with Director and Exco level stakeholders and you can develop high value relationships at all levels.
  • You will have excellent leadership skills and be able to nurture and lead a high performing team
  • Being resilient and calm under pressure is key, stepping back and considering the bigger picture and being comfortable leading through uncertainty and ambiguity.

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

  • Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It's also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
  • Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
  • Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you're sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it's a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.
The extras you'll get

What makes us different

Nationwide is the world's largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK's population. We've got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we're not a bank .

As a building society, we're owned by our members - that's our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose - Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.

When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You'll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You'll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don't have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
