Job summary

The Great Western Hospital is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Haematologist to join our team. This is a new 10 PA post at the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Swindon.

The successful candidate will join the existing team of six consultants in providing clinical haematology services to Swindon and the surrounding area. This a general haematology post covering both malignant and non-malignant practice. We are particularly keen to attract candidates who will develop the lymphoma service and take part in our autologous transplant programme.

We provide a clinical and laboratory haematology service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2b. There is a dedicated 10 bed haematology ward and haemato-oncology day care facilities. Our autologous transplant programme is JACIE accredited. Allogeneic transplants and CAR-T cellular therapies are managed in conjunction with Oxford University Hospitals. The department is supported by three specialty registrars (Severn Deanery), two specialty doctors, two ward based GPVTS posts, and an F2. There are also three Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) who each have a specialism (lymphoma, myeloma and transplant). The autologous stem cell programme is co-ordinated by the ACP in conjunction with JACIE Quality and Data Managers. Finally there are transfusion and anticoagulant practitioners who help deliver the transfusion and haemostasis/thrombosis services respectively.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should have a broad base of training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council. Additionally, they should be holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. The post holder should have the FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification. This is a position replacing an existing vacant post within the Department ofHaematology. The appointed candidate will join an existing team of six Consultants. The post involves responsibility for general haematology patients, including those with malignant disease with a focus on myeloma and autologous stem cell transplantation. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established team and will help with our ongoing work in driving forward improvements in the service to the benefit of our patients. As a senior member of the team, you will play a part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues. About us

The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 with well appointed accommodation for staff and patients. The hospital is a Teaching Hospital for undergraduate students from both Oxford and Bristol Universities. The Trust provides acute services to Swindon and the surrounding areas (catchment 350,000) and community services to Wiltshire (catchment 750,000). The Trust is expanding its cancer services, which form part of the Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network. In collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals, a new Radiotherapy Centre has recently been built and was opened late in 2022.

Swindon is an expanding town, which sits adjacent to the M4, at the heart of Southern Central England in the Wiltshire countryside. The Marlborough Downs, the Cotswolds and the towns of Oxford, Bath and Bristol are all within easy reach.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. We work very much as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and the post holder will be an integral part of this. Where appropriate, the post holder will also join our network of tertiary centre disease specific MDTs at Oxford University Hospitals. In addition, there is close liaison with the Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre, immunohaematology, NHSBT and transplant centre in Oxford.

2. Undertake ward rounds and outpatient clinics.

3. Continued responsibility for the management of patients under their care.

4. Develop a sub-specialty interest in malignant disease with a focus on myeloma and provide leadership in the management of these patients.

5. Provide an autologous transplant service.

6. Participate in out-of-hours consultant cover on a rota (anticipated to be 1:6). On-call responsibilities will include cover for haematology day and inpatients as well as clinical and laboratory consults arising from outside of the department

7.Actively participate in the day-to-day clinical supervision and management of the haematology laboratory

8. Active participation in clinical research with recruitment of patients to clinical trials, taking the role of Principal Investigator where appropriate.

9. Contribute to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education.

10. Provide cover for Consultant colleagues periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

11. Participate in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities to support revalidation, maintain laboratory and clinical accreditations and ensure the safety of our patients.

12. Undertake appropriate duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
