The Role


Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to cover a 12 month fixed term contract.

This is a part-time position, the post holder will be joining a full-time Highly Specialist SLT and an SLT Assistant to work predominantly within the Head and Neck oncology service with outpatients and inpatients.

The SLT service is operationally based within the AHP Therapy service, under the direction of the AHP Head of Therapies.

The post holder will receive external clinical supervision from a Consultant SLT and internal supervision from the AHP Head of Therapies.

The Responsibilities

  • Supporting patients undergoing radiotherapy/chemotherapy treatment with their swallowing and communication needs
  • Supporting patients with swallowing and/or communication disorders receiving palliative radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy
  • Assessing and managing acute patients with swallowing or communication difficulties in the oncology inpatient wards
  • Participating in SLTled video fluoroscopy clinics
  • Managing complex patients, such as those with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy, as competencies allow
  • Attending and participating in team meetings
The post holder will deliver specialist training within the hospital to health care assistants, student nurses and other professionals. Youwill contribute to the clinical training and supervision of junior members of the team and SLT students.

12 months clinical NHS experience, working as a SLT

Degree qualification or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy

Specific Knowledge in the management of Head and Neck Cancer patients

Experience working within Oncology setting
