Junior Clinical Fellow in Acute Medicine

The Junior Clinical Fellow on the MAU is responsible for the admission and care of patients referred from General Practitioners and the Emergency Department.

This post is based at Chorley Hospital, all doctors may be asked to work on either hospital site in the event of emergencies.


Junior medical cover on MAU consists of four Clinical Fellows working alongside three Foundation Year 2 doctors in a full shift rota.

Each doctor will be expected to present their cases during consultant led post take ward rounds, maintain full, clear clinical notes, and make appropriate handover arrangements when going off duty.

They are also responsible for looking after ward patients out of regular hours. Middle grade doctors will be present on site to supervise them at all times.

The post-holder will be required to be as flexible as possible in respect of working hours, in order to allow some flexibility in the MAU rota.

The evolution of working practices may also lead to changes in the planned rotations which might involve working on both sites


As a junior clinical fellow, you would be required to support Senior doctors with our ward jobs and help with clerking as required.


We are keen to develop our doctors' skills and you would have opportunities to perform invasive procedures like lumbar puncture, ascitic paracentesis (diagnostic and therapeutic) and pleural aspiration.

Assessing patients for referred by GPs or ED for admission to the acute medical unit: Making comprehensive assessments, ordering appropriate investigations, interpreting results and formulating initial management plans for patients under supervision by senior medical staff

Day to day care of patients admitted to the unit

Attending, and contributing to wards rounds on the unit

Performing relevant practical procedures where competent

Completing appropriate paperwork for patients on discharge and liaising with other specialist teams and GPs regarding relevant follow up

Participating in the out of hours on call rota including acute medical admissions and cover of ward patients. This will include being part of the arrest team

The post holder will have the opportunity to attend outpatient clinics and undertake agreed audit and quality improvement activities.

There will also be opportunities to take part in teaching and supervision of FY1s, medical students and other health professionals.


The Directorate of Adult Medicine combines services both at Chorley & South Ribble District General Hospital and the Royal Preston Hospital.

MAU at Chorley has 23 beds with 2 GP lounges. There is a designated team led by consultants who perform daily ward rounds. There are opportunities to perform basic medical procedures and get involved in day-to-day care of patients and ward jobs.

MAU in Royal Preston Hospital has 33 beds and is managed by Acute Physicians and outlier teams jointly.

As major cohort of patients are at front door, Acute Medicine team provides in reach into ED and performs post takes and Day 2 patient reviews.

Two Consultants in Acute Medicine currently supervise the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU).

The Department is well supported by a visiting Dermatologist, Oncologist and Rheumatologist, as well as other relevant specialties such as Ophthalmology and ENT.
