With and on behalf of the Associate Director of Nursing for Quality and Patient Safety, lead, develop and implement key initiatives related to medicines management across the Trust, whilst working within the principles of continuous improvement.

Involving relevant stakeholders to ensure agreed standards, aims and targets are met.

A key part of this role will be to lead medicines safety improvement projects, monitor and report on medicines management within nursing and midwifery.


The Nursing and Allied Health Professions quality and safety team consists of a passionate group of professionals that utilise UHCWi methodology to engage staff from across the trust to make continuous improvements to care.


This includes leading work that focuses on reduction in harm from pressure ulcers, falls, safe manual handling, developments in tissue viability and medicines safety and our work includes support and education and leading ward and unit accreditation.

The team has clear objectives focused on empowering staff to deliver safe care and quality improvement.

Link closely with the medicines safety officer to help identify focus areas for quality improvement related to medicines safety.

Represent the Trust on Internal and External groups/meetings where appropriate.

Review and identify themes from medicines management metrics to inform Trust wide objectives and actions.

Present highly complex reports at meetings, committees and forums related to medicines management.

Develop and deliver medicines management education for nurses and midwives trust wide.

Act as a resource for staff related to medicines management metrics and objectives.

Support GDNAs to develop and monitor actions related to key metrics.

Analyse and interpret highly complex data in relation to key metrics and provide feedback at Trustwide committees and forums.

Responsible for ensuring reports are submitted within agreed timescales.

Provide high profile leadership and support to all staffing groups.


To lead and empower staff to be able to facilitate the principles of continuous improvement using UHCW i methodology in nursing and midwifery.

Utilise daily management to manage own daily work and promote this in others

Work with Matrons, managers, clinicians, multidisciplinary teams and service leads across the organisation, to support them to embed key safety and medicines management initiatives into their daily work


Ensure robust processes and systems are in place to communicate at all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders on medicines management initiatives and progress.

Effective contribution to relevant groups and committees, including progress issues.

Be an active member of the medicines safety committee.

Provide feedback to managers, including teams, on medicines safety concerns or standards, providing supportive advice and guidance. Establish effective communication and good working relationships with multi-professional colleagues within the Trust to support effective service delivery.

Lead investigations relating to medicines incidents related to Nursing and Midwifery.

Contribute to the waste reduction programme, identifying and pursuing opportunities to effectively manage finances.


Create and lead a medicines safety improvement programme - identifying themes and focus areas for improvement, based on incidents and audit/observation outcomes.
