An excellent opportunity hasarisen for a Band 6 Junior Sister to join us on our 35 bedded ward caring forbabies, children and young people with a variety of medical and surgical needs.

We are seeking confident,competent, enthusiastic and motivated applicants who wish to deliver thehighest standard of holistic care to these children and young people and theirfamilies. You must have excellent communication and team working skills, and beinnovative in your approach. You should have a wide range of clinical expertisein paediatric nursing as well as experience working within themultidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Using your leadership and clinical experience, you will work with your team as the Nurse in Charge to ensurethe maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times through theeffective management of staff and resources.

You will communicate effectively,be available for advice andsupport and act as a good role model, as well as liaisingwith all members of the multi-disciplinary team, co-coordinating all aspectsof care in the best interests of the patient and family.

You will act as a mentor, supervisingthe training of qualified and unqualified staff and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills.

You will liaise closely with the WardManager and Matron recognising and reporting accidents/incidents, developmentand changes which affect patient care directly andindirectly.

You will take appropriate action toensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patient care tonurses with the appropriate level of skill.

You will assist in other Paediatric wards or departments in the Trust if the clinical situation or staffinglevels demand.

You will show commitment to sustainingand developing your clinical competence and professional awareness.

This role will require you to workvariable hours in order to fulfil the needs of the ward. We are a hardworking and supportive nursing team. We ensure newmembers of our nursing team receive appropriate training according to theirskills and competences. We offer acomprehensive induction programme.

Job responsibilities

Professional/ClinicalLeadership

Establishand maintain communication with people about routine and daily activitiesovercoming any differences in communication between the people involved.

Toassess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care in the best interestof the patient and family.

Leadothers in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice.

Toactively lead in team nursing and the development of nursing responsibilitiesfor individual patients. To be responsible for the organisation of nursing careof patients who have been assigned to them.

Assessthe health and wellbeing needs of the child whose needs are relatively stableand consistent with others in the caseload.

Plan,deliver and evaluate programmes to address the childs health and wellbeingneeds which are relatively stable and consistent with others in the caseload.

Todiscuss with the senior colleagues the development and changes, both nursingand medical, which affect patients directly and indirectly.

Totake appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, including thedelegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate level of skill at alltimes. To report any accidents/incidents to the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and/orMatron.

Toensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordancewith the policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Staff Development

Developown knowledge and skills and contribute to the development of others.

Supervisethe training of qualified and unqualified staff in accordance to their level ofcompetence, and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills.

ToAct as a mentor for junior staff, to participate in teaching for all learnersin accordance with their objectives, working closely with the Clinical Facilitators.To provide support and supervision of learner nurses. To participate inteaching programmes.

Maintaina wide knowledge of current practice an issues within the speciality by readingrelevant journals and attending study days where appropriate. Promoting theimplementation and teaching of research based practice.

Toattend mandatory training days.

Toorganise and provide training programmes in accordance with the identifiedneeds for the department.

Clinical Governance

Promotebest practice in health, safety and security.

Contributeto quality improvement.

Promotepeoples equality, diversity and rights.

Participatein personal and departmental clinical audit.

Toensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance withthe policies of the Trust.

Management

Promoteeffective communication with ward/departmental staff and multidisciplinaryteams.

Tomanage effectively the ward/department in the absence of the wardmanager/Matron.

Toprepare the duty rota for staff within the Ward establishment. To provide aneffective and well balanced skill mix to meet the requirements for a 24 hourservice and to ensure the presence of a suitably qualified and experiencednurse at all times.

Maintainthe custody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, orderingreplacements, checking and administering all drugs according to theWorcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust policy.

Tooversee and ensure adequate ordering and maintaining adequate stocks ofsupplies and provisions within the Ward/Department under the supervision of thebudget holder.

Contributeto the implementation of services.

Plan,allocate, assess and provide feedback to team members.

Maintainand support the efficient use of physical and/or financial resources.

Tocollect information for and participate in studies to determine patientdependency and quality assurance

Totake all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents to theMatron and to monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and theeconomic use of supplies.

Maintainaccurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms areused.

Beconversant with Trust and other policies, procedures and mechanisms in Place.

Towork in accordance with government initiatives to ensure targets set areachieved.

Toassist in other Paediatric Wards and/or Departments of the Trust if theclinical situation or staffing levels demand. To help any other PaediatricDepartment if that Department is unable to remain self-contained because of itsown demands.

Maintain good relations and communication withother Departments and multi-disciplinary teams.

To share Paediatric nursing skills with themulti-disciplinary team from other clinical areas.
