The 13 chaired day unit cares for patients with a range of cancers whoare receiving chemotherapy. We aim to provide an individualized and supportiveenvironment for patients in which to deliver this specialized high standardcare.

We are looking for someone who wants to increase theirOncology/Hematology experience and wants to work within this rewardingenvironment. Applicants should have the motivation to undertake a recognizedpost registration oncology course in the future. If you have cannulation,phlebotomy, or central lines skills it will be an advantage, but if not, thenyou should have enthusiasm and dexterity to develop these skills. The abilityto communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team isessential.

All our new staff nurse will be provided an extensive training programmeof 9 weeks and will be supported by a buddy and mentor in the giving of thetreatments, completing the SACT passport and then further training on otheraspects of the SACT will follow once established on the unit.

Main duties of the job

Assesspatients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and bloodparameters are satisfactory to safely receive treatment according to treatmentprotocols/regimes and escalate any concersn to the co-ordinator.

Administerand dispose of intravenous and chemotherapy safely

Provideinformation regarding treatment and side effects to ensure each patient isprepared for their specific treatment and elicit informed consent.

Provideone to one and telephone advice to patients and their families regardingtreatment side effects and management of side effects to ensure each patientreceives care which is specific and appropriate to their needs.

Usegood communication skills to enhance and augment patients understanding andadapt information to their specific needs as they progress through treatment.

Recogniseand provide the psychological and emotional support needed by individuals andtheir families whilst undergoing treatment and refer on to other professionalssensitively and appropriately in order to adequately meet patients needs.

Assesspatients with difficult venous access and make recommendations, with seniornurse support for alternative access to ensure patients receive treatmentsafely and with minimum risk.

Ensuresafe administration of chemotherapy regimens according to trust protocols

Job responsibilities

Providefollow-up care / maintenance of central venous lines for patients and adviseother health care professionals involved as appropriate, to ensure thepatients line is safely and adequately cared for in accordance with Trustpolicy.

Administerother intravenous therapies Blood, bisphosphonates, to patients accordingto protocols / regimes to ensure therapies are delivered safely and withminimum risk

Monitorand instigate care with senior nurse support to address / prevent reactions toand complications of treatment including administration of prophylactic agents.

Operational Responsibilities

Establishand maintain effective communication and foster good working relationships withall multidisciplinary teams, both internal and external.

Makeuse of electronic internal / external mail and Internet systems as appropriateand necessary.

Escalateany concerns or complaints or incidents that affect users of the unit inaccordance with complaints, risk management, or human resources procedures.

Bringto the attention of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse/ Co-ordinator any factorswhich may adversely affect patient care or service provision.

Reportall serious incidents to the appropriate Manager / Director within 24 hours;these include Never Events and serious falls and complete datix incident forms inaccordance with trust policy.

Beknowledgeable about the specific care requirements of patients within the unit.

Beknowledgeable about current infection control procedures and policies andensure all staff and visitors adhere to these at all times.

Beknowledgeable about the risks of infection and take responsibility forminimising cross infection within the clinical environment, assist in givinginformation and placing patients appropriately (isolating active infectivepatients for treatment).

Ensurethat patient care is evidence based.

Assessand escalate potential problems or issues to ensure a safe, effective environmentfor staff, patients, and visitors.

Responsibilities for Patient CareTherapy & Treatment

Actas a role model when carrying out and demonstrating nursing care and proceduresto junior members of the team and students.

Ensureaccurate, comprehensive contemporaneous and clear documentation of patientscare.

Ensurethat own written reports are in accordance with Trust policy and NMC guidelines

Befamiliar with the policy for safe administration of prescribed therapies,including Medicines Management, Intravenous Therapy, Patient Group Directives,clinical guidelines for cytotoxic administration.
