It Is an exciting time to join the Childrens nursing teamat WAHT. A new dedicated 14 bed Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) is being planned and will beoperational 24/7.

The post will suit experienced nurses whowant to develop into more senior roles. The Children's Department is committedto supporting ongoing professional and personal development and benefits from astrong nursing team and a Nurse Educator to ensure that you gain clinicalcompetencies in a timely manner.

You must be able to adapt to a fast-pacedchanging environment, can time manage and prioritize safely, whilst deliveringa high standard of nursing care to a cohort of children and young people.

Main duties of the job

Using your clinical experience and skills youwill work with you team as a named nurse to maintain accountability forassessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the frameworkof team nursing.

Acting with compassion you will put patients atthe centre of all you do.

You will communicate effectively with patientsand their carers regarding their care and educate patients where there is aneed.

You will communicate effectively with themultidisciplinary team to ensure high quality patient care.

You will show commitment to sustaining anddeveloping your clinical competence and professional awareness.

You will provide supervision, support andeducation to unqualified staff and students.

This role will require you to work variable hoursin order to fulfil the needs of the ward.

Job responsibilities

Role Details

You will develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.

You will safeguard vulnerable children and young people.

You will participate in preceptorship programmes as appropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor / role model to less experienced staff.

You will educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified, including information on adopting a healthier lifestyle

You will complete patient documentation correctly.

You will communicate effectively with patients, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.

You will be responsible for developing and sustaining your own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with NMC requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice.

You will assist in the training and development of student nurses and health care assistants and complete assessors training as required.

You will contribute to research and development programmes within the ward / department.

You will contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.

You will participate in handling complaints in accordance with Trust policy.

You will maintain a safe clean ward environment and ensure all appropriate general risk assessments are carried out within 24 hours of admission and document and plan care accordingly manual handling, pressure risks, slips trips and falls, nutrition, safeguarding.

You will show an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.

You will assist in the assessment of staffing requirements, reporting problems to the appropriate manager.

In the absence of a more senior member of staffand as part of your development programme, with support, will be able toundertake clinical / shift management within the department.

Other Job Requirements

Ability to undertake manual handling and movement tasks and wear appropriate protective equipment.

Prepared and able to work variable shift patterns early, late, night shifts over 7 days of the week.

Awareness of self-presentation to patients and relatives.

Youmaybeasked to assist other departments where 0-17 year olds presents on an ad hocbasis and with support

Qualifications

Essential

Registered nurse on sub part 1 of the professional register Evidence of continuing education for more experienced Band 5 nurses in speciality

Experience

Essential

Can demonstrate a specific interest in children and young peoples nursing Will require a specific speciality related qualification/equivalent experience related to the post or willingness to work towards within 18 months of qualification

Desirable

Experience as working on a childrens ward or paediatric assessment unit Significant proven knowledge and experience in children and young peoples nursing
