Job summary

An exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Staff Nursehas become available on our Busy 18 bedded Haematology Ward.

We are offering the Band 5 position with trainingto administer chemotherapy, care for post transplant patients and triage callson the Acute Oncology Helpline

We welcome applications from both experienced Band5 nurses and newly qualified.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 nurse you will be required to lookafter an allocation of patients including:

Admission, holistic care needs, complex care needs,pre and post chemotherapy administartion care, caring for post stem celltransplant patients, arranging outpatinets appointments, followup appointmnetsand discharge

Establishing working relationships with ourdedicated clinical nurse specialist teams, doctors and consultants

reporting to the nurse in charge and liasing withthe multidisplinary teams, involved in care on the ward.

Job responsibilities

Using your clinical experience and skills you willwork with your team as a named nurse to maintain accountability for assessing,planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the frameworkof team nursing.

Acting with compassion you will put patients at thecentre of all you do.

You will communicate effectively with patients andtheir carers regarding their care and educate patients where there is a need.

You will communicate effectively with themultidisciplinary team to ensure high quality patient care.

You will show commitment to sustaining anddeveloping your clinical competence and professional awareness.

You will provide supervision, support and educationto unqualified staff and students.

This role will require you to work variable hoursin order to fulfil the needs of the ward.

You will show courage by embracing new ways ofworking and doing the right thing by the people you care for, includingspeaking up when you have concerns.

Role Details

You will develop, implement and evaluate programmesof care including discharge planning for each patient.

You will safeguard vulnerable adults.

You will participate in preceptorship programmes asappropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor / role model to lessexperienced staff.

You will educate patients and their carers asrequired where a need has been identified, including information on adopting ahealthier lifestyle.

You will complete patient documentation correctly.

You will communicate effectively with patients,carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.

You will be responsible for developing andsustaining your own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness inaccordance with NMC requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio withevidence of reflective practice.

You will assist in the training and development ofstudent nurses and health care assistants and complete assessors training asrequired.

You will contribute to research and developmentprogrammes within the ward / department.

You will contribute to the setting and monitoringof measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.

You will participate in handling complaints inaccordance with Trust policy.

You will maintain a safe clean ward environment andensure all appropriate general risk assessments are carried out within 24 hoursof admission and document and plan care accordingly manual handling,pressure risks, slips trips and falls, nutrition, safeguarding.

You will show an awareness of budgeting, exercisingcare and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.

You will assist in the assessment of staffingrequirements, reporting problems to the appropriate manager.

In the absence of a more senior member of staff andas part of your development programme, with support, will be able to undertakeclinical / shift management within the department.

Other Job Requirements:

Ability to undertake manual handling and movementtasks and wear appropriate protective equipment.

Prepared and able to work variable shift patternsearly, late, night shifts over 7 days of the week.

Awareness of self-presentation to patients andrelatives.

The post holder will adhere to localand national radiation protection requirements
