Overview Head Of Payroll Services - Perm role - Chesterfield - Hybrid Role

Salary £55k - £65k dependant on experience plus annual bonus


As the Head of Payroll Services, your role primarily is to take full accountability for the processing and reporting of all the payrolls.

This includes both weekly and monthly payrolls for all group companies and payrolls where Gi operate as a Payroll Bureau.


You will be responsible for supporting and developing your team members whilst ensuring all relevant training is carried out and that the team are kept up to date with payroll legislation changes and all Gi operational changes.


With 3 direct report and an overall team of 14 you will be an experienced Manager and Mentor and will be able to identify strength and areas of improvement so to improve opportunities and succession planning.

Head Of Payroll Services Responsibilities

  • Manage the payroll workload to meet operational requirements.
  • Ensure all payrolls are processed in an accurate, compliant and timely manner.
  • Prepare P32 information for accounts, ensuring all information reconciles back to each payroll.
  • Responsible for ensuring EPS and FPS returns to the HMRC are all reconciled and are submitted by the appropriate deadlines.
  • Support Payroll Supervisor with the processing of eight monthly payrolls.
  • Responsibility for the reconciliation and payment of all pension deductions to the relevant providers.
  • Compile data from Payroll sources for management reporting purposes and prepare all relevant weekly, monthly and yearend reports.
  • Accountable for managing and resolving all issues relating to payroll and acting as an escalation point for all branches and sites.
  • Provide guidance and support to the payroll team and branches and sites on payroll legislation.
  • Payroll lead on all internal and external audits, ensuring all information is sent timely and is fit for purpose.
  • Responsible for all tax year end/tax year start activity, ensuring the team are aware of all relevant changes. Check and issue P60S to all colleagues.
  • Responsible for reporting relevant benefits via P11D submission to the HMRC.
  • Roll out operational changes/updates to team and ensure the payroll team are implementing the changes in a consistent manner.
Head Of Payroll Services Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years working in Payroll.
  • CIPP qualified.
  • Experience of managing a team and a busy payroll function.
  • Excellent knowledge on all aspects of Payroll Legislation.
  • Fully conversant with Pension arrangements including Pension Auto Enrolment and salary sacrifice arrangements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of P11DS and PBIK.
  • Good working knowledge of Excel.
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify and drive change within payroll.
  • Familiar with taking ownership for issues and seeing them through to resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
