Recovery Worker

About the Service / Department
Together Café provides a safe space for people who feel that they are experiencing or moving towards a mental health crisis.
People aged 18+ from Tower Hamlets can help with a range of interventions including 1-1 support and safety plans, wellness & recovery action plans and social prescribing.
Staff and volunteers will have an asset-based approach, focusing on the strengths and coping skills of people using the Cafe, helping them to understand how they could use these assets to decrease their own distress and promote their wellbeing.
In line with the principles of the Hestia Approach (an intervention strategy that help our service users reconcile themselves with their own intrinsic value) the Cafe will be co-produced with those who use it as well as with local voluntary, statutory and community-based organisations.
Together Cafe is a warm, welcoming and non-stigmatising environment, offering a range of activities and a quiet, low sensory space to cater for individual needs and aspirations.
About the role
- To provide support to customers using Hestia's Tower Hamlets Café to reduce their crisis by offering a range of activities and interventions within the service during opening times
- To motivate customers to identify causes of crises and to prevent these issues triggering crisis in the future
- To develop simple yet effective safety plans with the individual users to proactively manage their mental health and wellbeing and to avoid the use of crisis services such as A&E
- To carry out individual one to one sessions with customers and, where appropriate, to support them to develop their own mini wellness, recovery action plan
- To assist customers to develop their social networks in order to attend mainstream or specialist educational, leisure and health related activities to support positive mental health and wellbeing in the future
- To work with volunteers to offer life skills development for customers such as food preparation and cooking
- To work in collaboration with ELFT practitioners to deliver an effective and safe service
- To liaise effectively with statutory providers and other voluntary sector agencies involved in the support and / or treatment of customers
- To actively participate in continued professional development to be able to support customers with a range of mental health issues and associated impacts including thoughts of selfharm, drug and alcohol use and behaviour which may be experienced as challenging
- To take an active role in supervision, reflective practice, appraisals, team meetings and other support mechanisms with the Team Manager outside of the operational hours of the service, in order to maintain resilience to be effective in this challenging yet highly rewarding environment
- To work closely with the Team Manager, Service Manager and other colleagues to provide a whole team approach to customers using the service
- To promote and publicise the service appropriately in line with the service Communication and Engagement Plan with support from the Team Manager
About you
- Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches.
- Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers.
- Awareness of health and safety issues.
- Ability to work at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
- Ability to work in accordance with service opening times: 17:00 21:00 Monday to Friday, 12:00 21:00 weekends and bank holidays.
- Good IT skills, that includes a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Outlook and the internet.
- Ability to complete and record basic financial transactions, i.e. managing petty cash.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
