Whitehaven, Cumbria, United Kingdom SNC-Lavalin Full time

Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Safety Engineer (Radiological Protection) within the AtkinsRéalis Decommissioning and Waste Services team. The successful candidate will report directly to the Decommissioning Services Technical Manager and will take a leading role in providing radiological protection safety engineering support to the design, commissioning, and operation of nuclear facilities. This will be principally in support of the UK's submarine enterprise but may extend to other areas of the business as required.

This will principally involve inputting into design processes and producing radiological protection documentation in support of safety case production, but may extend to providing operational radiological protection advice and support; this includes:

Radiation Risk Assessments. Dose assessments. Discharge and radiological consequence assessments. Identification of Safety Functional Requirements, and engineering and administrative controls. Support to and chairing of ALARP study workshops. ALARP justifications. Advising on area designations. Developing source terms and advising on target dose-rates for new facilities. Support to HAZID studies.

Whilst the main roles and responsibilities will be based around radiological protection, there will be significant cross over with radioactive waste, therefore flexibility is essential.

Qualifications:

Degree in a relevant subject, or demonstrable equivalent ability and experience. Equivalent qualifications will be considered. Appropriate membership of professional body.

Essential Criteria:

Experience in providing radiological protection advice to the design of nuclear facilities, including knowledge of the ALARP principle, the Hierarchy of Controls and engineering requirements for restricting exposure to ionising radiation. Experience in writing technical radiological protection documentation, such as Radiation Risk Assessments and / or safety cases documents. Knowledge of the requirements of The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017. An understanding of the Office for Nuclear Regulation Safety Assessment Principles and supporting Technical Assessment Guides. Knowledge of nuclear industry good and best practises. You must be able to work effectively within a large multi-disciplinary team. You will be able to communicate clearly and effectively to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and be open to challenge and considering alternative points of view. You will be able to use your knowledge and experience to influence design and assessment processes to achieve positive safety outcomes. You will be expected to work independently and be able to manage your own workload. Your work will be of high quality and delivered in accordance with project the project programme. Able to use standard Microsoft Office tools effectively. Able to obtain an SC security clearance. There is an expectation that you will assist with maintaining excellent client relationships, therefore an ability and willingness to undertake occasional travel is essential. Ideally, you will hold a full UK driving licence.

Desirable Criteria:

Experience in preparing for chairing or inputting into ALARP study workshops. Experience in participating in HAZOP studies. Knowledge of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016. Knowledge of Radioactive Substances Regulations objectives and principles, and the Generic Developed Principles for radiological protection, radioactive substances management and decommissioning. A desire and willingness to work and develop in a complex, challenging environment in support of nationally important work.

The Individual:

We are seeking a confident, capable individual with a high level of initiative to take on key role supporting critical national projects. Reporting to Decommissioning Services Technical Manager, the successful person will play a key part in the delivery of radiological protection safety case documentation and delivering facilities for clients that ensure safety throughout their operational life. This person will demonstrate technical proficiency, a sound understanding of the practicalities of implementing specified solutions, and professionalism in all aspects of their work.

The successful applicant will be willing to challenge the status-quo, where appropriate; a questioning attitude is vital to long term success. They will be able to identify underlying technical points which often govern and delay decisions, and use this knowledge to implement safe, compliant solutions.

This position would suit a well-established health physicist or radiological protection engineer who has experience in producing safety case deliverables and who is ready for a new challenge.

Training:

AtkinsRéalis encourages and enables individuals to develop through training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals and tailored through an appraisal process. You will be supported to reach your professional goals.

There is a development expectation that you will work towards becoming a Member of the Society for Radiological Protection followed by Chartership of that same learned society. There is no requirement to become an accredited Radiation Protection Adviser, but that development pathway would be supported.
