Post Title:
Community Garden Worker

Part Time - 21 Hours/Week

The MAXwell Centre's Community Garden is located at the heart of Coldside area in Dundee.

The garden project and outreach programme has attracted schools, community groups and individual residents to take up the challenge of growing their own food using the allotment plots, raised beds and polytunnel facilities.


You will have a flexible approach to gardening and be adaptable enough to work with people of all ages and abilities.

Your excellent interpersonal skills will be exercised every day as we welcome everyone into the garden.

Main Duties
You will be required assist the garden coordinator.

This involves supporting them to run the community garden and outreach activities, deliver training sessions, facilitating groups' and individuals' food production.

Some of the sessions take place out with normal working hours so you will be flexible enough to work evenings/weekends as needed.


Support and develop active community involvement in the Project's activities through the appropriate use of the media, posters, leaflets and outreach work.

Assist with the evaluation and monitoring of the Project including the maintenance of records, statistics etc.


Together with the Board of Directors ensure that all policy and procedures are in line with the organisations current policy and procedures.


  • Garden maintenance and improvement
  • Run volunteer and small group gardening sessions and support their learning and development
  • Assist with the Tool and Seed Library and Harvest Boxes
  • Assist, organise and deliver workshops and events
  • Run garden tours and help improve visitors experience
  • Communications and administrative support
  • Support fortnightly Youth Council meetings.

Other Duties

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.

Ability to analyse and resolve problems, seeking support when and as soon as required. Can-do attitude.

Tidy, well organized and the ability to plan workload effectively.

EXPERIENCE
Experience with working with and supporting volunteers and community members ideally in a garden setting.

Experience of supporting projects and work colleagues.

Experience of organising work sessions or events.

KNOWLEDGE
Essential - Knowledge of growing fruit and vegetables from seed.

Desirable - knowledge or experience in pruning, propagating, composting, successional growing and sustainable growing practices.

Desirable - knowledge or experience in woodwork, cooking and crafts.

An understanding of the factors that impact on and issues faced by local people.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Be a team player demonstrating loyalty and commitment to the project and team members.

Ability to listen and to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
