This is a fixed term, fulltime, clinical post for one year (extendable by mutual agreement). It will be based mainly at King's College Hospital's Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup (QMS) and Princess Royal Farnborough sites, though potentially at any of the King's sites as appropriate. The individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

The post holder will also have the opportunity work with service leadership and local clinical commissioning groups to develop and improve existing pathways for high volume cataract surgery and streamline processes to maximise theatre efficiency for Ophthalmic surgery at Queen Mary's and Princess Royal University Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The remit for this post will be to provide consultant support focusing on delivering high volume cataract surgery. There may be a requirement to work at any of the Trust's sites depending on clinical and service need.

There is no fixed job plan as the postholder will be expected to cover vacancies in the cataract service due to annual and study leave. Depending on the demands of the service the postholder may be required to cover the Emergency service or other clinical sessions as appropriate. There will be an average of 8 clinical sessions per week, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. The On-Call commitment is classed as Category B. Weekly timetables will be provided to the post holder with a minimum 6 weeks' notice.

As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Together with the other Ophthalmologists, to provide a service for Ophthalmology patients across all sites. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

2. Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.

6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R& D framework.

7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).

10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.

11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.

12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years), therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
