Senior Researcher

Oxford, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

Applications are invited for a Senior Researcher who will work on and scientifically coordinate an exciting new UKRI/EPSRC project entitled “Advanced Device Concepts for Next-Generation Photovoltaics.”

The position is available for a fixed term until the end of the project, 30/9/2028.

This project is associated with a new EPSRC/UKRI-funded Programme Grant entitled “Advanced Device Concepts for Next-Generation Photovoltaics.” This collaborative project between Oxford Physics, Materials and Chemistry and Liverpool Chemistry brings together expertise in photovoltaic materials synthesis and device fabrication, advanced characterisation and modelling. The ambition for this project is to carry out multidisciplinary research, via inter-linked work streams, that will explore and conceive four new photovoltaic device concepts and paradigms, enabling the next major step-change in photovoltaic efficiency. New devices architectures, concentrator PV, quantum cutting, hot-carrier collection and photon transport, will be explored and enabled by absorber materials based on metal-halide perovskites, silicon, and novel low-band-gap chalcogenide-halide semiconductors, supported by fundamental experimental characterisation and materials modelling. Addressing these future advanced concepts through a holistic approach will enable key scientific discoveries and important major technical advances enabling the next generation of PV technologies for beyond 2030.

The Senior Researcher role will focus on both running and coordinating the scientific research collaborations within the project, supporting the PI, Professor Snaith, in the management of the project and undertaking original research by themselves.  The applicant will have the opportunity to co-supervise PhD students and direct their own projects.

  • Hold a relevant Ph.D/D.Phil in physics, materials science, chemistry or engineering with significant post-qualification research experience.
  • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies.
  • An established international reputation and publication record.
  • Ability to independently plan and manage research projects, including research budgets.
  • Ability to raise research funds through making grant applications.
  • Have demonstrable ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Technical expertise in photovoltaics, thin-film deposition and advanced characterisation of semiconductor materials and devices.

Applicants should be highly motivated and have the ability to lead and motivate a team of researchers.  Previous experience of providing academic supervision would be an asset.  It would be highly beneficial if applicants also possess a track record of successful grant applications. The applicant is expected to be at the stage in their career where they are starting to look for independent faculty positions and/or independent fellowships.

Oxford University, The Department of Physics and The Photovoltaic and Optoelectronic Device Group offer an inclusive and diverse environment and workplace. We strongly encourage applications from all backgrounds and genders to apply.

Only applications received before midday 5 August 2024 can be considered. You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.
