We’ve teamed up with the Smallwood Trust, a charity with a mission to enable women to become financially resilient by equipping them with the skills they need to secure a confident financial future. They provide grants to organisations and individuals and work with selected partners to help women overcome financial adversity and to improve their social and emotional well-being. By working with Smallwood, you are helping to change women’s lives.

Smallwood are looking for an experienced charity or non-profit leader to join them as their Head of Programmes, to play a wide ranging and key role within the leader­ship structure, working closely with the CEO, the Grants Team and the Board. This role is a 12-month maternity cover, from August 2024 – July 2025 and will have 7 direct reports.

This role will be remote with 1-2 meetings/visits per month to Smallwood’s offices in Malvern, Worcestershire, or other project locations. The salary for this position is £55,000. Key aspects of the role will include:

  • Working closely with the CEO to implement and operationalise Smallwood’s refreshed grant-making strategy, which is due to be approved by the end of 2024.

  • Budgeting and implementing/designing new grant processes and procedures, overseeing the programme management of complex grant priorities across a portfolio of multiple work streams.

  • Shaping and delivering an evaluation framework that enables Smallwood to more effectively track progress against their longer-term outcomes.

  • Instilling a learning and continuous improvement culture across the organisation, ensuring that a coherent approach is taken with grants programmes and funding meets the needs of Grant Partners.

  • Overseeing and ensuring effective relationship management between the staff team and grant holders, community grant partners and other key stakeholders across all grant programmes.

  • Managing the overall grants budget, including oversight of external budgets and supporting programmes team to manage their individual programme budgets.

  • Co-leading on the EDI strategy, ensuring that grant-making embeds the principles of EDI.

  • Adhering to relevant legislation, best practice, policies and processes including; but not limited to, charity law, the fundraising regulator, GDPR and professional codes and standards

We believe that the successful Head of Programmes will have previous experience in developing and maintaining a wide range of relationships with different stakeholders, including grantees and other funders, along with experience in successfully designing and delivering strategies for programmes. As this role will have 7 direct reports, it is essential that you are confident when it comes to leading teams, too
