Key Responsibilities: 


Academic Leadership: 

  • Provide visionary leadership in the planning, management, and enhancement of the BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology programme, including the Foundation Year. 
  • Ensure the alignment of the curriculum with current academic standards, emerging trends, and accreditation requirements. 
  • Collaborate with other academic leaders and faculty to maintain an innovative and relevant curriculum that meets the evolving needs of students and society. 

Curriculum Development & Review

  • Design, implement, and continuously review program curricula to maintain high academic standards and relevant subject benchmarks 
  • Ensure the integration of interdisciplinary approaches within sociology, criminology, and foundational studies to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the subjects. 
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum updates, module enhancements, and the development of new academic initiatives to keep the program current with industry trends and academic developments. 

Teaching Excellence & Student Engagement: 

  • Foster an environment that promotes excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment through mentorship, faculty development, and student approaches. 
  • Encourage and support diverse teaching methodologies to enhance the student-centred learning experience, promote engagement, and foster critical thinking skills. 
  • Supervise student projects, placements, and fieldwork, and ensure that these experiences align with academic and employability outcomes. 

Faculty Recruitment & Development: 

  • Lead efforts to recruit, retain, and develop a diverse, high-performing team of educators with expertise in sociology, criminology, and related fields. 
  • Mentor faculty members, particularly those new to teaching, and provide ongoing professional development opportunities. 
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative culture among staff that promotes academic growth, teaching excellence, and research opportunities. 

Student Support & Success: 

  • Support student retention, progression, and success by ensuring a student-centred learning environment and providing academic and pastoral care. 
  • Champion initiatives to improve student engagement, retention, and employability outcomes. 
  • Serve as a key point of contact for students, providing guidance, mentoring, and assistance with academic and personal development. 

Program Evaluation & Quality Assurance: 

  • Ensure that the programme adheres to UKMC’s academic standards and quality assurance processes, including module evaluation and periodic reviews. 
  • Lead the preparation of accreditation reports and participate in internal and external program audits. 
  • Use data-driven insights to assess and enhance the program’s impact, including student feedback, employability outcomes, and academic performance metrics. 

Collaboration with Partner Institutions: 

  • Work closely with UKMC’s partner universities and other external stakeholders to ensure the programme aligns with global educational standards and provides students with international opportunities. 
  • Encourage collaboration on joint research initiatives, curriculum development, and student exchange programmes with partner universities. 
  • Act as the main liaison between UKMC and its partner institutions to ensure that student experiences and academic outcomes are on par with international standards. 

Budget & Resource Management: 

  • Collaborate with senior management to manage the programme’s budget, ensuring resources are allocated strategically to support academic initiatives, research, and faculty development. 
  • Identify opportunities for cost-saving measures, revenue generation, and securing external funding to enhance the program. 

Community & Industry Engagement: 

  • Cultivate partnerships with local communities, law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and other relevant organizations to provide students with real-world experience and applied learning opportunities. 
  • Promote community engagement through guest lectures, industry partnerships, and research collaborations that benefit both the academic and wider community. 

Research, Innovation & Scholarship: 

  • Promote a culture of research, encouraging faculty and students to engage in cutting-edge sociological and criminological research. 
  • Support faculty in developing research proposals, securing funding, and publishing research outputs. 
  • Foster collaboration between faculty, students, and external partners to encourage innovation and applied research that addresses real-world social issues. 

Strategic Planning & Institutional Contribution: 

  • Contribute to the development and execution of UKMC’s strategic plans, particularly as they relate to sociology, criminology, and social sciences programs. 
  • Participate in college-wide committees and governance structures, contributing to the institution’s broader academic and operational objectives. 
  • Advocate for the program within UKMC and the wider academic community, promoting the programme’s strengths, achievements, and vision for the future. 


Qualifications & Experience: 


  • Education: 
  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in Sociology, Criminology, or a related social science field from an accredited institution. 
  • A teaching qualification (e.g., PGCLTHE, PGCE, etc) or a commitment to acquiring one. 

Experience: 

  • Substantial experience in academic leadership roles, preferably in sociology, criminology, or a related social science discipline. 
  • Proven experience in curriculum development, quality assurance, and programme management. 
  • Experience of a critical understanding of the key concepts and theories of sociology and criminology and applicability to human behaviour in society. 
  • A successful track record in teaching, research, and student mentorship at the higher education level. 
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team and engaging with diverse student populations. 

Skills & Attributes: 

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate faculty and students. 
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, both within the curriculum and the wider academic environment. 
  • Strategic thinking, with a clear vision for the future development of the programme and the ability to implement change. 
  • Ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including community organizations and academic institutions. 


Professional Development & Expectations: 


  • Commitment to continuous professional development and active participation in research and scholarly activities. 
  • Willingness to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (if not already held) and achieve Fellowship status under the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Standards Framework.

  • Flexibility regarding location and working hours, including occasional travel to partner institutions and participation in outreach.
