Research Assistant

Cambridge, United Kingdom Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute Full time

We are looking for a bright and motivated Research Assistant to join our team at the CRUK Cambridge Institute (part of the University of Cambridge) to investigate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in the emergence of therapy resistance in cancer.

You will be part of a small team, led by Dr Sito Torres-Garcia, which studies the contribution of epigenetic factors to cancer progression under therapy by blending novel laboratory models with innovative experimental and computational methodologies. Our ultimate goal is to unravel conserved epigenetic mechanisms that drive therapy resistance in cancer, but also general adaptation to stress in mammalian cells. Understanding these mechanisms could shed light on broad principles of eukaryotic adaptation and reveal potential therapeutic opportunities to improve patient outcome.

Our team is based and embedded in Professor Greg Hannon’s laboratory, a multi-disciplinary group of scientists working on diverse areas ranging from fundamental RNA biology to metastatic cancer research and the development of new technologies.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and competent individual with excellent laboratory skills in molecular biology or biochemistry. A background in chromatin biology/epigenetics or expertise with relevant genomics methods such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, or CUT&Tag are desirable.

Experience with tissue culture, molecular cloning, or bioinformatic analysis would be beneficial but are not strictly required. The successful candidate should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and have the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a diverse team.

As a member of our team and the Hannon laboratory, you will have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas to ongoing research activities. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive working environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and scientific excellence.

Applicants should have a BSc or MSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences) as well as a reasonable amount of practical research experience.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for one year from the beginning of the contract.

For more information about our research please see: www.sitotg.com. For informal queries regarding the post please contact Dr Sito Torres-Garcia (sito.torres-garcia@cruk.cam.ac.uk).

We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.

Click the ‘Apply’ button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.

Please send applications in the following format: a CV, a cover letter, and the names and contact details of two academic referees. The cover letter should outline why you are applying for this role and how you match the criteria for the post (see Further Particulars).

The closing date for applications is 4th August 2024, with interviews expected to take place shortly after this date. The starting date is flexible, but ideally 15th September 2024.

Please quote reference SW42316 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
