Job summary

ITU is an 11 bedded combined High Dependency and IntensiveCare unit that cares for patients who are critically ill; providing all aspectsof nursing care and multidisciplinary rehabilitation after critical illness.

This is an exciting opportunity for anexperienced Registered Nurse with experience in Critical Care nursing and ineducating and mentoring staff. The applicant must hold a post graduatequalification in Critical Care, ( Step 2 and step 3 competencies orequivalent), and previous experience of the Band 6 role is preferred. There isthe expecation that the candidate will be willing to progress to achieve a PGCEor equivalent, if not already achieved. An in depth knowledge of Intensive careacross the specialist field, and evidence of effective leadership, excellentcommunication skills, developed organisational and interpersonal skills areessential. The role will require a flexible working pattern including unsocialworking hours to meet the changing development and educational needs of the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will supervise and support staff in line with educator requirements, ensuring the MDT have the skills to assess care needs and implement programs of planned care. The Practice Development Educator role will require you to lead and facilitate the continuing professional development within the Critical Care team, where you will actively participate in clinical practice as an effective role model; mentor and preceptor to junior members of the MDT; with the focus of positively influencing the quality of care delivered to patients. You will be integral to the planning and co-ordination of educational activities and must demonstrate the ability to manage resources effectively to meet the needs of the service, whilst promoting & maintaining effective communication with all disciplines internally & across directorial boundaries within the Trust. At times you will be expected to work as part of the Intensive care senior nursing team by maintaining a Band 6 clinical role and will represent the unit at Critical Care network education events.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

Develop educationalwork plans, consistent with departmental objectives, ensuring these arerealistic and achievable, taking into account multidisciplinary team membersabilities and developmental needs.

Prioritise daily activities to respond to changingcircumstances, providing a seamless educational service to users.

Objectively assess the work of multidisciplinary team members,providing clear constructive feedback in a manner most likely toimprove/maintain performance.

Contribute to the ongoing audit cycle to identify issueswhich arise during the care of the critically ill patient. Participate ineffective implementation of measures to combat these issues.

Monitor the standards of assessment, planning,implementation and evaluation of educational programs of Critical Care.

Be proactive with audit and monitoring of documentation toensure that it is produced in accordance with Trust policy and also NMC/HCPCguidelines.

Monitor clinical practice ensuring that all procedures andtechniques are carried out in accordance with local competencies and agreedpolicies and standards.

Act as the patients advocate in all matters relating tohis/her care, treatment and welfare.

Contribute to recruitment and retention using agreedmethods and protocols for staffing and skill mix.

Ensure that departmental/environmental standards aremaintained in accordance with Trust policy and Infection Control standards.

Promote and support the implementation of best practicethrough evidence based approach, participating in audit and challenginghistorical practices & unprofessional cultures.

Assist with performance reviews of all members of the team,facilitate and monitor performance in line with local competencies and Trustpolicies.

Assist in the development of Clinical Quality Standards,co-ordinate implementation and audit outcomes with a systematic approach toservice users.

Ensure that organisational policies are adhered to inrespect of sickness absence & performance management.

Prioritise own workload in a manner that promotes jobsatisfaction & quality service delivery.

Work in a supervisory capacity.

Represent the trust at the Critical care network forums.

Develop links with the relevant university practiceplacement staff.

Ensure Intensive care education strategies andstaff information is kept up-to-date.

Special Requirements

Essential

Extensive experience in mentoring student nurses and new ITU Nursing staff. The ability to put together and present education packages. A good working knowledge of computer packages.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse ( 1st level ). Degree or working towards. Teaching /assessing Qualification. Post graduate qualification in Critical care ( step 2 and 3 competencies).

Desirable

MSc. PGCE or working towards.
