Position Overview
The Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) is a specialized 11-bed facility that provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing critical health challenges. Our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and multidisciplinary rehabilitation for those recovering from severe medical conditions.
This role presents an exciting opportunity for a seasoned Registered Nurse with a background in Critical Care nursing, as well as experience in staff education and mentorship. Candidates should possess a postgraduate qualification in Critical Care (including Step 2 and Step 3 competencies or their equivalent), with prior experience in a Band 6 position being advantageous. The ideal candidate will be committed to pursuing a PGCE or an equivalent qualification if not already obtained. A thorough understanding of Intensive Care practices, along with proven leadership abilities, strong communication skills, and well-developed organizational and interpersonal skills, are essential for success in this role. Flexibility in working hours, including evenings and weekends, will be necessary to accommodate the evolving educational needs of the team.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Guide and support team members in accordance with educational standards, ensuring that the multidisciplinary team is equipped to assess patient care requirements and implement effective care plans.
- Lead and facilitate ongoing professional development within the Critical Care team, serving as a role model, mentor, and preceptor to junior staff, with the aim of enhancing the quality of patient care.
- Play a crucial role in the planning and coordination of educational initiatives, demonstrating the ability to manage resources effectively to meet service demands while fostering open communication across various disciplines within the organization.
- Occasionally fulfill responsibilities as part of the senior nursing team in the Intensive Care Unit, maintaining a Band 6 clinical role and representing the unit at educational events within the Critical Care network.

Job Responsibilities

- Oversee the standards of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs within Critical Care.

- Ensure clinical practices adhere to established competencies and agreed-upon policies and standards.
- Act as an advocate for patients in all matters related to their care and treatment.
- Support recruitment and retention efforts by utilizing established methods and protocols for staffing and skill mix.
- Maintain departmental standards in accordance with organizational policies and infection control measures.
- Promote the implementation of best practices through an evidence-based approach, participating in audits and challenging outdated practices.
- Assist in performance evaluations of team members, facilitating and monitoring their development in line with local competencies and organizational policies.
- Contribute to the development of Clinical Quality Standards, coordinating implementation and auditing outcomes systematically.
- Ensure adherence to organizational policies regarding attendance and performance management.
- Manage personal workload effectively to promote job satisfaction and quality service delivery.
- Work in a supervisory capacity.
- Represent the organization at Critical Care network forums.
- Establish connections with relevant university practice placement staff.
- Keep Intensive Care education strategies and staff information current.
Qualifications and Skills
- Registered Nurse (1st level) with a degree or in progress.
- Teaching/assessing qualification.
- Postgraduate qualification in Critical Care (Step 2 and 3 competencies).
- Extensive experience in mentoring student nurses and new ITU staff.
- Proficient in developing and presenting educational materials.
- Strong IT skills.
- Demonstrated emotional intelligence and excellent communication abilities.
- Effective leadership skills and specialist knowledge in Intensive Care nursing.
Special Requirements
Registered with the NMC and significant experience in an Intensive Care setting is essential. Candidates should possess a solid understanding of relevant equipment, policies, and procedures, along with evidence of ongoing professional development and mentorship experience.
