Main duties of the job

This appointment is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Acute Oncology, based at Southampton General Hospital. You will join the Cancer Care Group (Haematology, Oncology and Suppotive Care) and will participate in the urgent management of patients with haematological and oncological conditions admitted via the acute oncology unit.

The post is available for 12 months in the first instance. MRCP parts 1 and 2 are an essential requirement for this role.

You will spend the majority of their time assessing new admissions, training the nurse practitioners and providing oncology outreach to the wider hospital. There will be opportunities for you to develop other skills outside the acute oncology unit.

Job responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOULL DO

The principal duties of the posts will be:

1. To undertake care of haematology and/or oncology patients presenting as an emergency and following inpatient admission. The post holder will work within the acute oncology service in close collaboration with clinical teams, specifically:

a. Haematology subspecialty teams

b. Medical oncology subspecialty teams

c. Clinical oncology subspecialty teams

2. To undertake initial assessment and clerking of patients attending acute oncology including co-ordination and review of investigations, decision-making regarding admissions and liaison with and referral to other clinical teams

3. To initiate treatments including blood products, supportive care including non-SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) treatments, fluids, electrolytes and symptomatic therapies

4. To take referrals from and undertake liaison with other clinical teams outside the care group including outreach to patients under those teams and review of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) patients

5. To support the phone holders, advanced clinical practitioners and other members of the team in decision making regarding patients who have telephoned for advice

6. To gain experience in undertaking procedures relevant to acute oncology, including insertion of catheters and drains, with appropriate training and supervision

7. To cross cover planned and unplanned leave of other junior doctors including where needed in other specialties within the care group

8. To undertake care of patients undergoing clinical trials, showing evidence of training and understanding of Good Clinical Practice. Where required, appropriate training in clinical trial protocols will be provided

9. To engage in the care groups clinical governance programme, including, for example, audit, clinic incident reporting and quality meetings.

10. Attendance at the haematology and oncology clinics where time permits and subject to the interests and experience of the postholder

11. If interested, to participate in the collection and analysis of local data with a view to preparing and submitting papers for publication.

You will work alongside other junior clinical fellows, Foundation Year doctors, Foundation Fellowship doctors, Internal Medicine Trainees, Higher Specialist Trainees and Specialty Doctors in haematology and oncology within a supportive, approachable team structure including ward nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and the wider subspecialty medical teams.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

The posts are ideally suited to those who are interested in pursuing haematology, medical oncology, clinical oncology or palliative care as a career and open to those looking for opportunities at IMT3 equivalent grades and above. It would be suitable for out-of-programme experience for a specialist trainee in any field relevant to cancer medicine but may also be suitable for an individual who does not yet have a national training number and wishes to pursue a career in cancer medicine

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule ( additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training

Hold relevant higher specialty exam ( FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)

A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
