Role Summary

This position is for a Lead Clinical Fellow in Emergency Oncology, located at Southampton General Hospital. You will become a vital member of the Cancer Care Group (Haematology, Oncology, and Supportive Care) and will engage in the immediate management of patients with hematological and oncological disorders admitted through the emergency oncology unit.

The role is initially available for a duration of 12 months. Holding MRCP parts 1 and 2 is a mandatory requirement for this position.

Your primary responsibilities will include evaluating new admissions, mentoring nurse practitioners, and providing oncology support to the broader hospital environment. There will also be opportunities to enhance your skills beyond the emergency oncology unit.

YOUR DUTIES

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  1. Providing care for hematology and/or oncology patients presenting as emergencies and following inpatient admissions. The post holder will collaborate closely with clinical teams, specifically:
  • Hematology subspecialty teams
  • Medical oncology subspecialty teams
  • Clinical oncology subspecialty teams
Conducting initial assessments and clerking of patients attending the emergency oncology unit, including coordinating and reviewing investigations, making admission decisions, and liaising with other clinical teams. Initiating treatments, including blood products, supportive care (non-SACT treatments), fluids, electrolytes, and symptomatic therapies. Receiving referrals and liaising with other clinical teams outside the care group, including outreach to patients under those teams and reviewing cases of cancer of unknown primary (CUP). Supporting phone holders, advanced clinical practitioners, and other team members in decision-making regarding patients seeking advice. Gaining experience in performing procedures relevant to emergency oncology, such as catheter and drain insertions, with appropriate training and supervision. Providing coverage for planned and unplanned absences of other junior doctors, including as needed in other specialties within the care group. Participating in the care of patients involved in clinical trials, demonstrating training and understanding of Good Clinical Practice. Necessary training in clinical trial protocols will be provided as required. Engaging in the clinical governance program of the care group, including audit, incident reporting, and quality meetings. Attending hematology and oncology clinics when time permits, based on the interests and experience of the postholder. If interested, participating in the collection and analysis of local data with the aim of preparing and submitting papers for publication.

You will collaborate with other junior clinical fellows, Foundation Year doctors, Foundation Fellowship doctors, Internal Medicine Trainees, Higher Specialist Trainees, and Specialty Doctors in hematology and oncology within a supportive and approachable team structure, including ward nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and the wider subspecialty medical teams.

Candidate Profile

This position is ideally suited for individuals interested in pursuing careers in hematology, medical oncology, clinical oncology, or palliative care. It is open to those seeking opportunities at IMT3 equivalent grades and above. This role may also serve as out-of-programme experience for a specialist trainee in any field relevant to cancer medicine, or for individuals who do not yet possess a national training number but wish to pursue a career in cancer medicine.

Additional Information

Appointments will be made under local contractual terms and conditions for Trust-appointed (non-training) fellow doctors and dentists.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, with a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the position. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available for study leave. All licensed doctors must meet GMC requirements for revalidation, and an annual appraisal will support this process.

Trust-appointed (non-training) fellows will receive a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, as outlined in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary details are as follows:

  • MT04 £55,329 Basic Salary
  • MT05 £63,152

Salary will be determined based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5 include:

  • A minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Holding a relevant higher specialty exam (FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence demonstrating criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the specialty similar to deanery trainee)

Travel expenses will not be reimbursed for attending interviews.

It is essential for candidates to have GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and the right to work in the UK. Successful applicants will either already have GMC registration or be able to demonstrate eligibility. Candidates requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Previous or Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Internal Medicine experience for at least 12 months, OR
  • Clinical Haematology experience for at least 6 months OR
  • Oncology experience for at least 6 months

Desirable

  • 6 months experience of working as a doctor in the NHS
  • Publications and presentations relating to haematology and/or oncology
  • Participation in service improvement projects
