Key Duties

Core Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Participating as a member of the Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) multidisciplinary teams (MDTs)
  • Contributing to the management of GI and HPB patients
  • Attending GI and HPB MDT meetings
  • Sharing patient referrals for GI and HPB
  • Supporting the Patient Triggered Follow Up (PTFU) pathway
  • Providing medical oncology expertise to GI and HPB services
  • Planning and overseeing chemotherapy/immunotherapy
  • Conducting treatment review clinics
  • Supervising inpatient care and providing cross-cover for annual leave of other GI and HPB consultants
  • Engaging in peer review meetings
  • Participating in the recruitment and management of clinical trials

As a teaching hospital, all consultants are expected to actively engage in the education and training of junior medical and nursing staff, as well as allied health professionals. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff is also a requirement, along with involvement in educational supervision in accordance with General Medical Council standards.

Additional Information

Applicants must hold registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). Successful candidates will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Recognized training in academic oncology with a postgraduate qualification
  • CCT in Medical Oncology (or within 6 months of CCT date) or equivalent qualifications and experience for entry onto the Specialist Register

Previous Experience

Essential:

  • Comprehensive experience in Medical Oncology
  • Experience in multidisciplinary team collaboration
  • Experience in managing upper and lower gastrointestinal cancers and gynecological cancers

Desirable:

  • Significant experience in oncology research
  • Experience within the NHS
  • Teaching experience
