Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust is pleased to present an exceptional opportunity to join our esteemed team. Below is a comprehensive outline of the responsibilities and expectations associated with this role.

Key Responsibilities

Are you passionate about clinical practice but not yet ready to focus on a specific area? Do you seek to enhance your expertise in a prominent teaching hospital while learning from experienced pharmacists at advanced and consultant levels?

Our pharmacy department is among the largest in the nation, comprising over 300 professionals recognized for their innovative practices. The pharmacist team includes more than 100 pharmacists, featuring over 50 qualified independent prescribers and five consultant pharmacists who are leading experts in their fields. We are dedicated to fostering the professional growth of all our pharmacists.

Our band 7 clinical rotational pharmacists engage in 9-month rotations, acquiring clinical experience and skills that support their advancement in Leadership and Management, Education, and Research. We are committed to creating new rotations and opportunities to facilitate your career progression.

About Our Organization

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we provide numerous learning and development opportunities to help you achieve your career aspirations.

Non-clinical roles may involve a combination of on-site and remote work, with specific details and flexible working arrangements discussed during the interview process. Employees at UHS have access to various NHS discounts, a minimum of 35 days of paid leave (pro rata), and a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is a desirable location for both living and working, situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct train services to major cities. The New Forest National Park and the stunning beaches of the Jurassic coast are also nearby. The cost of living in the city is approximately 20% lower than in major metropolitan areas, complemented by 14 schools rated outstanding by educational authorities.

Job Duties

This role offers a unique opportunity for professional development as you rotate through various specialties, allowing you to collaborate with specialist and consultant pharmacists while determining your own area of focus. Our rotations encompass:

  • Medicine: Engage in specialties such as respiratory, gastro/hepatology, elderly care, or acute medical units. Responsibilities will vary based on your assigned area, including supporting ward rounds and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Neurosciences: As a tertiary referral center for neurology and neurosurgery, you will initially cover a neurosurgical ward, with opportunities to rotate into other specialties such as stroke and spinal care.
  • Surgery: Provide ward coverage in specific surgical areas, including maxillofacial and gastrointestinal surgery, with opportunities to attend multidisciplinary ward rounds and develop skills in nutrition support.
  • Critical Care: Collaborate with consultant pharmacists and experienced critical care pharmacists, attending consultant-led multidisciplinary ward rounds across various intensive care units.
  • Cardiovascular and Thoracics: Work within the cardiovascular and thoracic care pharmacy team, gaining experience in cardiology, cardiac surgery, and related fields.
  • Microbiology: Participate in a highly regarded microbiology rotation, engaging in antibiotic stewardship activities and contributing to infection management.
  • Oncology: Join a dedicated oncology pharmacy team, involved in all stages of the medication process and providing ward coverage.
  • Children's Services: Access a self-directed training program for children's pharmacy, gaining experience across various clinical specialties.
  • Diabetes and Endocrine: Engage in local and regional projects related to diabetes and endocrinology, enhancing clinical skills in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Management: Support the Lead Pharmacist in Operations and Supply Services, developing management and leadership skills.

In all rotations, you will be expected to provide support to trainee pharmacists, engage in formulary applications, and contribute to teaching various healthcare professionals, audit work, and guideline development.

Additional Information

For the first time, we are potentially offering this role as a band 6-7 progression position, advertising both band 7 and band 6-to-7 progressive roles. Our ideal candidate would be someone who can immediately operate at the band 7 level. If a suitable band 7 applicant is not found, we will consider offering the position as a development opportunity for a band 6 pharmacist willing to progress to band 7. A pharmacist appointed on a 6-7 progression post will complete tailored rotations to facilitate their development.
