Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon. The successful applicant will join team of consultants providing a comprehensive range of spinal surgery to the West Midlands as a secondary and tertiary referral centre, and over a wider area as a quaternary referral centre. The appointee is intended to be an experienced spinal surgeon with the ability to deal with the full range of spinal pathologies and develop a subspecialty interest to support the needs of the service. The service has speciality interests in Trauma, Oncology, vascular, adult deformity, intradural and intramedullary pathologies including CSF disorders, as well as seeing a high volume of spinal trauma and infection and offering the full range of simple and complex surgery for spinal degenerative conditions. There is a dedicated spinal on-call service (currently 1:9 rota) dealing with all spinal emergencies from around the region and in-house emergencies through A&E and the Major Trauma Service including spinal trauma, metastatic spinal cord compression, spinal infection as well as acute myelopathy and cauda equina compression that may require complex spinal procedures.

In the Department cranial and spinal services work as independent services with regards to provision of both elective and emergency with separate on call rotas, and there is nonrequirement for the successful candidate to undertake any cranial work.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Neurosurgery is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham utilising facilities within the New QEHB Building and Bournville Ward in the Heritage Building. We are recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for the delivery of outstanding care and treatment for brain cancer patients.

The neurosurgery service encompasses:

36 beds on W407, 36 beds on W409, 8 beds on W411

3 dedicated elective neurosurgical operating theatres 5 days a week, shared between spinal surgery and cranial neurosurgery

One dedicated emergency neurosurgical operating theatre 24/7 shared between cranial surgery and spinal surgery

Access to 8 beds on the ambulatory care unit

12 designated neurosurgical beds in the hospital's Critical Care Unit

Full imaging services, including 6 MRI scanning units.

Full out-patient facilities with electronic patient records

Full post-graduate training facilities

The post will be based at the QE Hospital Birmingham, although travel to different sites may be required. The appointee will provide at least 10 programmed activities. This would comprise of programmed activities for direct clinical care and a maximum of for supporting professional activities. The appointee should be able to reach the hospital within 30 minutes of being called for emergencies.

KEY SKILLS

Specialist knowledge for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of all spinal conditions, with specialist interest in subspecialty relevant to needs of the department.

Knowledge of spinal patient pathways to support appropriate and timely emergency and elective care.

Extensive experience of pre and post-operative care of spinal patients.

Excellent communication skills for speaking to patients, families and carers; medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues, support teams and a wide range of other parties in a healthcare setting.

Ability to adapt to a changing environment as healthcare evolves.

Commitment to, and enthusiasm for learning new skills and techniques and supporting their introduction into the neurosurgical department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

To undertake the full range of activities associated with a spinal emergency on call duty, including the appropriate management of patient's post-take

To manage a cohort of elective spinal patients in a timely way, from the triage and management of referral, through stages of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, with appropriate onward referral or discharge as required.

To engage with and support colleagues to ensure appropriate and timely management of spinal patients within the West Midlands region.

To deliver appropriate levels of clinical, administrative and surgical activity proportionate with the agreed job plan in line with the specialty activity plan.

To ensure that patients are involved in decisions about their care and respond to their views.

To support the ongoing improvement of spinal patient pathways within UHB through the sharing of good practice, undertaking audits and research and participating in governance practices such as incident reporting and investigation.

To engage with continuous professional development, maintain GMC specialist registration and licence to practice
