Job description

Job responsibilities

Endocrinology Service

The Endocrinology service provides secondary and tertiary care to patients with a wide range of endocrine conditions from the West Midlands and beyond. The department combines provision of a clinical service with an active, world-leading research programme. The services we provide are nationally and internationally recognised include those for patients with pituitary disorders, thyroid, metabolic bone and calcium disorders, adrenal disorders (recently awarded Centre of Excellence status by the European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumours, ENSAT), reproductive disorders and neuroendocrine tumours (also Centre of Excellence status); we also provide services for young people undergoing transition/transfer from paediatrics, survivors of cancer and pregnant women with endocrinopathies.

The service centres around busy outpatient departments located at QEHB and is underpinned by an evidence-based approach to care. Future plans are to further develop integrated care pathways with primary care, one stop clinics, remote monitoring and increased use of PIFU.

The department is jointly staffed by NHS and University. All services are supported by our nursing team who provide comprehensive care including running the endocrine day case unit, providing patient education and nurse-led clinics.

The department works in close collaboration with biochemists, endocrine surgeons, geneticists, gynaecologists, neurosurgeons, obstetricians, oncologists, ophthalmologists, paediatricians and radiologists. Much of the care is provided in a multidisciplinary team setting, with patients attending joint clinics. It also has close links with Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham Women's Hospital and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Diabetes Service

The Diabetes service provides secondary care diabetes support across Birmingham and Solihull and specialist support to the tertiary services within UHB ( renal, cardiac, oncology, liver transplant) and to Birmingham Women's Hospital (antenatal diabetes). A range of inpatient and outpatient services are delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of specialist staff including consultants, nurses, dietitians and podiatrists. Diabetes outpatient services are provided at QEHB through a number of daily clinics.

The T1D service at UHB is one of the largest in the country. It serves a population that is diverse both in ethnicity and demographics and is spread across 4 hospitals in Birmingham, however these posts will only cover QEHB. We provide all aspects of specialist T1D care. This includes structured education (DAFNE), insulin pump, glucose sensing, hybrid closed loop therapy and beta cell replacement (both islet and pancreas transplantation). The service was one of the largest contributors to the recent NHSE Hybrid Closed Loop. Supporting exercise education for type 1 diabetes (EXTOD) and clinical research are core interests of the service. The majority of patients are offered participation in one or more clinical studies.

Inpatient Services

We are important contributors to inpatient care both from the perspective of specialty in reach and general internal medicine. Each site runs consultant led specialty in reach services along side the diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialists. There are inpatient beds at QEHB. All newly appointed consultants will contribute to a 7 day rota providing senior medical cover for the inpatient services supported by a team of junior doctors.
