Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon to join our team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive range of spinal surgery services to the West Midlands region.
Main DutiesThe post holder will be based within the Spinal services for all elective and emergency activities. Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking the full range of activities associated with a spinal emergency on call duty, including the appropriate management of patients post-take.
- Managing a cohort of elective spinal patients in a timely way, from the triage and management of referral, through stages of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, with appropriate onward referral or discharge as required.
- Engaging with and supporting colleagues to ensure appropriate and timely management of spinal patients within the West Midlands region.
- Delivering appropriate levels of clinical, administrative and surgical activity proportionate with the agreed job plan in line with the specialty activity plan.
- Ensuring that patients are involved in decisions about their care and responding to their views.
- Supporting the ongoing improvement of spinal patient pathways within UHB through the sharing of good practice, undertaking audits and research and participating in governance practices such as incident reporting and investigation.
- Engaging with continuous professional development, maintaining GMC specialist registration and licence to practice.

Key Skills and QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess:
- Specialist knowledge for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of all spinal conditions, with specialist interest in subspecialty relevant to the needs of the department.
- Knowledge of spinal patient pathways to support appropriate and timely emergency and elective care.
- Extensive experience of pre and post-operative care of spinal patients.
- Excellent communication skills for speaking to patients, families and carers; medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues, support teams and a wide range of other parties in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment as healthcare evolves.
- Commitment to, and enthusiasm for learning new skills and techniques and supporting their introduction into the neurosurgical department.
- Leadership skills to manage your team and support trainees.
- The ability to engage with and inspire confidence in others.
- The emotional resilience to support your team in sometimes difficult circumstances.
