Job summary

Applications are invited for the above Fellowship which is a new appointment for a candidate seeking to increase their experience in adult cardiac surgery and advanced heart and lung failure strategies (cardiopulmonary transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and donor organ retrieval) by providing service commitment while learning non-operative and operative skills pertaining to both these aspects of the cardiac surgical service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham (QEHB).

It is envisaged that this is part of a 2-post appointment with two successful candidates sharing the role between conventional and advanced heart and lung failure strategies, alternating responsibilities on a 2-weekly basis.

Main duties of the job

*provide in and out-patient care to pre-operative, operative and post operative conventional cardiac surgical patients including ward rounds and residential on call commitments (2 week days Monday to Friday/month). This includes attending in house conventional cardiac surgical MDTs. During the assigned conventional weeks the fellow will access 2 conventional list/ week and 1 clinic per week and attend ward rounds of the assigned consultant as well as conventional MDT and M + M meetings

*to support in-patient care of advanced heart and lung failure patients, including attending ward rounds, consenting, in patient care and in patient assessment MDTs, assisting and delivering short and long term MCS and assisting in the implantation of hearts or lungs including when on call with additional flexible delivery of care. It also includes supporting the post operative management of these patients on the ITU and ward and in clinics.

*to play a key role in meeting the Department's contracted obligations for the provision of NORS and in ensuring that the overall performance of the Unit meets the quality criteria agreed with purchasing consortia. The appointee will adhere to the Standard Operating Guidelines for provision of cardiopulmonary organ retrieval services conducting DBD isolated heart or lung organ retrievals independently and assisting in DBD split organs retrievals and DCD organs retrievals in conjunction with other surgeons as part of the Birmingham cardiopulmonary NORS team.

Job responsibilities

The new appointee will be fully involved in the day -to- day running of the advanced heart and lung failure strategies service half of the time and conventional services attached to a consultant the other half. It is envisaged this will be a shared post with another similar appointee alternating their assignments equally between the two services. Both appointees will be assigned to the same consultant.

The post holder will be a member of cardiac surgery department in the tertiary services division of the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The successful candidate's line manager and supervisor will be Mr. A Ranasinghe, Director of Cardiopulmonary transplantation. Trust level management of CDG10 is Edwin Waters as the group general manager and Dr. M Hakkak as the associate director of operations.
