Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic, dedicated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse / ODP to join our team in the Post Anaesthetic Care Units (PACU) in Wakefield and Pontefract. Having the ability to enable and empower their team, strong leadership and performancemanagement is an integral aspect of this role. Patient safety is essential and underpins all aspects of unit management.

Main duties of the job

Acting as clinical lead and Coordinator for PACU on a shift by shift basis Initiating and promoting excellence in clinical practices as a role model to junior staff Ensuring high standards of care and patient safety Delivering care for post anaesthetic patients, maintaining haemodynamic and ventilatory monitoring Clinically competent in using all available equipment Liaising with Site Manager to promote patient flow out of PACU Escalating to Theatre Management team any issues with staffing or patient flow

Job description

Job responsibilities

To work clinically on the unit, initiating andpromoting excellence in clinical practices as a role model to junior staff.

Ensure high standards of nursing care aremaintained and provided within a safe and caring environment.

Prepare bay areas for admission of PostAnaesthetic patients ensuring all equipment is available, correctly assembledand functional.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patientcare using evidence to rationalise care for both conscious and unconsciouspatients independently.

Contributes to creating a culture within PostAnaesthetic Care, which recognises and works in partnership with patients andtheir carers, involving them in all decisions relating to their care delivery.Act as the patients advocate where appropriate.

Work in collaboration with other professionalsto promote seamless patient care delivery.

Process diagnostic tests and obtain samples asrequested by medical staff. Report results when available to appropriate staff.

Identify and develop an individual area ofexpertise and disseminate this in different formats to meet the needs of theinformation to be delivered ; verbal, newsletter, poster electronic.

Overseeing and maintaining accurate patient andorganisational records according to NMC and Trust guidelines.

Having the freedom to act within clinicalguidelines to ensure ongoing patient wellbeing.

Having the freedom to act within clinicalguidelines in an emergency situation.

Responsible for own and whole departmentsrequirement to reduce hospital acquired infection and cross infection throughthe implementation of good practice effective hand washing; daily dampdusting of all bedside equipment; using protective clothing appropriately;rigorously applying standard (universal) precautions to minimise thetransmission of infection.

Responsible for ongoing cleanliness of patientand work areas, participating and overseeing activities where soiled andinfected material and waste may be handled

To be clinically competent in using allequipment available on the Post Anaesthetic Care area and be able to trainothers in its use ventilatory support; invasive pressure monitoring;intravenous infusion devices; near patient testing; dynamic mattress systems.

Constantly observe patients haemodynamic andventilatory status, accurately record observations and take appropriateactions, relaying abnormalities to colleagues within the MDT.

Safely care for patients with multiple infusiondevices, maintaining accurate fluid balance.

Use correct moving and handling techniques andappropriate equipment when moving or handling patients, stock and equipmentwhich may be soiled or infected.

Assess patients level of consciousness,utilising appropriate tools. Report changes as appropriate. Safely care foraggressive and/or confused patients, maintaining a safe environment at alltimes for patients, staff and visitors.

hand ventilation

and is able toprepare all equipment and safely care for the patient during and after theprocedure independently (procedures dependant upon individuals area ofpractice).

Respond appropriately in emergency situations tosupport the multidisciplinary team, taking a lead role in a cardiac arrestsituation within the Post Anaesthetic Care area.

Sensitively care for dying patients and theirfamilies, provide information and support. Be involved in organ donationprocesses as appropriate.

Safely prepare patients for discharge.Communicate verbally and in writing relevant information to receiving wards,specialist clinical teams, patients, carers, and other disciplines.

Transfer all level of patients (dependent upon individualsarea of practice).

Participate in internal rotation within the PostAnaesthetic Care areas to develop clinical knowledge and skills and ensure asafe patient and staff environment in times of peak activity.

Ensure self and team membersachieve annual mandatory training requirements

In conjunction with the LeadNurse ensure all staff have an individual performance development plan
