Job summary
This is a new consultant hepatology expansion post which is supported by the investment in the Hinckley Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). This is a brand new purpose built two floor health facility situated in the heart of Hinckley. The CDC will operate 7 days a week and will offer an extensive set of diagnostic services which includes endoscopy to meet the healthcare needs of the local population of Hinckley and its surroundings. Ward and specialist work (including inreach and specialist clinics/endoscopy sessions) will be run from the main UHL hospitals sites with further endoscopy and outpatient work at Hinckley Hospital.
There is further investment in the region with a new 6 roomed state of the art endoscopy facility opening in the Summer of 2025 at the LGH site.
You will be joining a team of 5 hepatologists and 2 CNS's. We work closely with infectious diseases in relation to the viral hepatitis clinics, with UHL being the hub for the local hepatitis C treatment network. There is a successful outreach program which means we are one of the highest treating MDTs in the have close links with the transplant unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, with one of the consultants providing clinics there. We have interventional radiology for TIPSS and transjugular liver biopsies. TACE is performed in conjunction with the oncologists. Fibroscan is available on the LRI site in clinic.

Main duties of the job
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients. To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community. Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences. Supervise and train junior medical staff To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors. Teaching, research and administration. To proactively develop the service. Endoscopy and outpatient sessions across the UHL sites and into the community hospitals Ward rounds, GI bleed on call

Job responsibilities
To provide Consultant Hepatology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester. To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care, as prescribed in GMC guidance Duties of a Doctor, at all times; and ensuring that bad practice is reported, as appropriate. To undertake regular audit and Continuing Professional Development to achieve revalidation. To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice. To liaise closely with other specialities, departments and outside agencies in contributing to the objectives of the department. To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported either to the Head of Service or Clinical Director or the Medical Director in a timely manner.
It is expected that the post holder will take part in the Departments on-call rota for In-reach and GI Bleed on-call, as well as participating in the ward cover for 21 inpatient hepatology beds across Wards 42 and 43 at the LRI site.
The appointment will be whole time. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.
