Biochemistry Research Laboratories Manager
4 months ago
About the Role
The post will be part of the Biochemistry Department within the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences. The successful candidate will ensure the upkeep, maintenance and safety compliance of the Biochemistry research laboratories in one of our buildings on Mile End Campus, currently occupied by researchers in the fields of biochemistry, structural and synthetic biology, and biotechnology.
Due to the nature of work involved, the operational core requirements of this role can only be met effectively when working on campus. This role is therefore exempt from a regular pattern of hybrid working. Remote working may be considered where the task undertaken permits and where there is sufficient cover on campus to fulfil service needs.
The post is to cover maternity leave, part-time (, 21 hours per week), with a start date as soon as possible until 30th of April 2025. It may end sooner if the post-holder exercises their right to return to work earlier.
About You
You hold a degree or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant field, ideally biochemical sciences. You will be comfortable providing technical expertise, H&S guidance and hands-on practical support over a broad range of laboratory activities.
About the School
The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences (SBBS) is divided into three departments – Biochemistry, Biology and Psychology and is home to over 100 academic staff, 40 postdoctoral researchers, 27 administrative staff and c30 technicians. We provide a supportive and friendly environment with a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching and research. We have strong links with industry, offering students a stimulating and supportive learning experience. In addition, the School is committed to equality of opportunity and holds a departmental-level Silver Athena SWAN Award.
This post is part of the Technical Services Career Family at Queen Mary, University of London, which supports functions across multiple sites and provides the infrastructure and support for all our research, teaching and learning activities. The University is a signatory of the Technician Commitment.
About Queen Mary
At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
Our reformer heritage informs our conviction that great ideas can and should come from anywhere. It’s an approach that has brought results across the globe, from the communities of east London to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
Benefits
In return, we offer 30 days’ leave per annum, access to a pension scheme, a season ticket loan scheme and competitive salaries. We also offer enhanced family friendly leave, and an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus. You will also work with a friendly team, with personal development opportunities.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability.
